Yes, you can replace the compressor, dryer and orifice tube and probably the condenser too if that happened due to internal binding.

RE: Question if you can drive it to mec (mechanic) like this = NO! Only if A/C is solely on it's own belt with whatever engine is in this could you remove that belt and go or it will probably burn out totally as HT just said. It's not clear if now clutch bearing or compressor bearings but either if now throwing shards of metal are too far gone.

Chances are it's on just one belt unknown stage of failure so when just that burns off you have no usable engine either so tow it or by-pass (don't think you can on this without parts) compressor for even a drive or run again. Past late on this,

This truck does not have a separate AC drive belt.

Didn't go hunting for every possible configuration or engine possible. OP, IMO doesn't understand that it's probably just a clutch or clutch bearing but now failed too much not just a noise. "Intermittent" mentioned suggests it's quiet when A/C engaged which would be fine to force it but not if too cold.

I doubt OP is ready to spend a freaking fortune on this especially if rear A/C set up. An hour's drive is too much and YOU or I might be able to create something but not fast enough nor quick DIY to look for options if just temp by-pass or used junk compressor with good clutch for the run to fix only?
OP - When ONE belt finally is destroyed you lose all belt driven items you can't fake. Alternator, PS, WATER PUMP + any damage when it lets go! So high bet you are in for a tow from where it is or worse underway if you try for that run,

Thanks for the info--Yes, it has one serpentine belt.
Last week, I drove the suburban into mechanic (30 min.), without the air conditioner on. It made a steady grinding but not super loud. Mechanic took out a lot of the old air conditioner and put in an "assy work-around" (a bracket from Napa for the air conditioner pulley) $99 half labor, half parts.Problem solved, Thanks
