'94 WB Festiva Temp gauge drops to zero when a.c switched on. Sign In

Hi, this my first post, long time lurker though. Names Bill from FNQ Australia.

Recently when i switch the a.c on on in my 1.3L Manual WB Ford Festiva the temp gauge drops soon afterwards, and starts jumping about but never gets to anywhere near normal operating temp. This morning i tried 'burping' my cooling system (no bubbles came up) and noticed that the radiator fan never started up . As soon as i switched the a.c on the radiator the fan started up.

I don't know if that's normal but thought i should mention it.

Anyways, if anyone can offer any advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Car not sold to US but fundamentally it sound like you mean it will not warm up engine to normal when fans are on and would be on with A/C request on most. If really LOWER than normal I'd say the thermostat isn't shutting tight as it should.

If so, from cold try just feeling hose AFTER thermostat as engine warms up. It really should stay cold till thermostat opens but if right away gradually warms up it's circulating too early or can't seal shut as said.

Fan may not come on till over the temp rating of thermostat when A/C is not in use and be normal?

Thanks, Tom. I will get a new thermostat and give that a try.

Go for quality and original temperature rating. Good time to flush with it out anyway again even.

If not misunderstood you were waiting for fan to come on from engine heat alone not regarding A/C so it could still all be normal. Some engine fans triggered by temp to cool engine wait till much higher than you might like to see but within norms. Hard to trust instrument panel gauges for accuracy.

There are small and accurate infrared thermometers and thermostat's housing should be real close to its rating. Air on heater request to floor vents should be close as well unless climate controlled types that don't blow extreme heat or cold air just more of it faster (many I know of) such that you don't freeze with cold air or too hot on feet for heat. Much more common in higher end vehicles,

G'day, Tom. I don't know what you mean by heater and air con 'requests' . Doesn't matter anyways, as problem has gone away.

Before i got around to getting a new Thermostat, some liquid appeared on the floor, in the cabin, on the passenger side, beneath the heater core housing and evaporator housing. I pulled out the glovebox to see if i could see what the problem was, but nothing stood out.

Later that day i drove the car, and when driving a bit too fast around a roundabout, i heard a glug, glug, glug, sound coming from the heater core and evaporator area.
It sounded a bit like water being poured from a bottle. Since then, everything is back to normal. : )

Seems to me, i had some kind of blockage that was fixed by the centrifugal force of me turning quickly.

Anyways all is now good with the world now, and i'm all grinned up. : )

Thanks a lot for your interest and help, Mate.

? So it's all gone now? Just make sure no leaks on floor or interior and if any find out if just water or antifreeze. Coolant must be kept full in engine not just the reservoir or all bets off with accurate temp reading.

The fans and heater/A/C requests: You mentioned fans thinking you meant to radiator. Cars will usually run fans all the time with Air Conditioning all the time and or when you ask for defrost or both defrost and another choice radiator fans can or will come on.

If thermostat was allowing coolant to flow even some it would cool it before engine warmed up so thought had to rule out thermostat.

I doubt your issue is fixed by just a fast turn so pay attention still. Now with that water noise and change check for coolant level and up to a pressure test for leaks,
