91 Chrys 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

Hello, and thanks for your assistance in advance. I have a 91 5th ave 3.3L 200k miles. As far as the AC goes, all hoses, filter/dryer, compressor, and switches have been replaced in the last year. Compressor one month ago. Air worked fine for the first month of installing new compressor. Then bang! No cold air. The pressure is within specs of what the service manual specifies. I think (Link deleted). You would think it was possibly the air direct door, but the compressor is not producing cold refrigerant at all as the hoses are very warm and not getting cold. Again, the compresser engages and pressure is fine. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Thanks Again,
CJ

If you don't post pressures and temps there isn't a chance we can help you,

I think they were 130/31 with an outside temp of 75. Whatever it was, it was in the specified zone of what the service manual called for.

Thanks again,
Chris

Re: 91 Chrys 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

130 on the high side is certainly too low. You might be low on refrigerant but you could also have a blockage in the system. You really need to completely evacuate the system and recharge it with the exact specified amount refrigerant. Since this has to be a retrofit, you can't even know what that should be. It should be about 80% of the original capacity.

Re: 91 Chrys 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

Thanks for your reply. No, its not a retrofit. ITs still R12 as I have just a bit left, and I did measure with a scale the exact ounces that the service manual specified as well as the specified amount of oil. Also ran a vacuum on it for several hours. It is not producing any bit of cold air. Both hoses are warm. If it is a clog, how can I find out where it the clog may be?

Thanks
CJ

It's usually either the dryer or the expansion valve. Judging by your pressures, I would suspect the dryer but I would replace both. Try to find someone with an R12 recovery machine to capture your refrigerant and re-use it.

The dryer was replaced with the compressor recently. How would you test to see where the clog is?

Thanks again,

Take it to a specialist that has the years of experience it takes to determine that.

MVAC isn't very DIY and if you don't know what MVAC means you are about a year's worth of training over your head!

Is that the pressure readings you are getting only at idle. What are the pressure readings when you bring the engine rpm up to around 1500? Open the windows and put the blower on high. What are your system pressures then?

Agree - low high side suggests bad compressor if charge is close,

Thanks,

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

The pressures suggest no refrigerant flow. Grab the liquid line near the dryer and feel the temp. It should be warm to the touch, not hot if there is travel. If not, it will be room temp.

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

Grabed both sides before and after the drier, and both are extreamly hot all the way to the condenser and on the other side back to the expansion valve. Looking through the site glass, it appears there is fluid moving. No air bubbles, but what appears to be a rush of fluid.

Thanks again,
CJ

Where is your high pressure service port? Before or after the point you were feeling?

Something is wrong with those readings

Between the filter/drier and the condenser. Same line that is also considerably hot.

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

That doesn't add up at all. You don't show nearly enough pressure for that line to be that hot unless maybe the condenser is restricted.

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

Dont know how else to prove it. If it is the condenser, how do I tell if it is clogged? Is there a test without breaking down the system? If I do have to break it down, should I be able to blow air through it to see if it is clogged? If that doesnt fix it, then what else to look for?

Thanks Again,
CJ

I can't teach what it takes in an Internet forum. You need to take it to a professional.

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

More information. When I short the fan to continually run, the line from the condenser to the expansion valve cools, but the high line from the back of the compressor to and including the condenser are extreamly hot. Does that give a clue to the condenser being clogged?

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

Why isn't the fan running in the first place. It's supposed to run with the A/C on.

I also think you have anissue with your A/C gauges. You need to try a different set.

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

Don't forget. This one has a variable displacement compressor. That might explain the wacky readings.

Re: 91 Chrysler 5th No Air - Pressure Perfect Sign In

The compressor isn't going to create hot gas leaving the condenser with only 130 PSI.
