I have an 08 Edge... It has roughly 70k on it, and since about 65k it has had an on again, off again problem with the Heating/AC fan that blows the air out slowing down, and quitting all together. Whether it is on level 4 or 1. Sometimes when I get back into the car after it had died the day before, it will come on full blast... last a couple weeks.... then die again like yesterday. Any help in trouble shooting this would be appreciated. Thanks! Matt

I'm assuming this has manual climate control because you stated blower speed positions. You should test for power and ground at the blower motor when the problem is occurring. You'll need to do a voltage drop test which means you need to keep the circuit alive by back probing the blower connector or piercing a wire then taking measurement with your digital volt meter. You can't perform this test properly if the blower switch isn't on or you disconnect wiring or connectors.

Power to the blower motor comes in on the black wire when any speed is selected. You should see close to battery voltage
The ground side of the blower (black/red wire) goes through the resistor in speed 1-3 and directly to the blower switch in speed 4. The blower switch completes the selected blower speed circuit to the vehicle chassis ground.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The next time it stops try rapping on the motor with a screwdriver handle and see if it responds.

Hi Discretesignals,

I will try this when I get home this evening. I understand all except the following:

Update: Yes, it is manual

Thanks!

Matt

Ok, the first thing I tried was to hit it with a screwdriver handle and it fired right up! So do I need a new blower?

Thanks for your help!

Matt

Yes. The blower motor uses brushes contacting an armature to allow amperage to flow through. When they get worn they do not make as good a contact as they need to, and the heat they build up while running for a while drops the power even more. When you rapped on the back of the motor, you jarred the brushes inward enough to temporarily make contact and work. By the fact it responded to that test, you have proven that the blower motor is indeed bad and a new one would fix it.

The voltage drop test would also have come to the same conclusion, but you would've needed to know how to do it. Congrats on getting to the root of the problem and luckily its not a super expensive part. This time of year you certainly can't be without working heat.

Yep, change the blower motor and in the process, make sure the connectors in the plug aren't burnt.
