2005 xterra ac issues

My 2005 xterra ac works on the lowest blower setting but shuts off when the blower is set from 2-4 position. What's more the blower will not operate properly when set to position 1 and 2. So, if I want cold air I put the ac on in the 1st position, and then put it in the 4th position in order to push the cold air generated, out of the vents, then it eventually (within 5 seconds) warms up. I am currently waiting for a new fan clutch (back ordered). I know from dealer that this is bad and will replace myself when it comes in.

If you know you have a bad fan clutch then you shouldn't even be trying to operate the A/C unless you want to spend another $800 when the compressor implodes and takes the rest of the system with it.
You probably need a blower resister for the blower problem.

There's more to this than a fan clutch which it may need and a blower resistor as blower shouldn't give a damn if it blows warm or cool air. When those two are working properly then some better diagnosing should help target the next issue,

Thanks, so if the ac still works on position one and I fix the fan clutch all should be operational?

You need to fix that first. You said it blows cold for a short time on high speed so is that because compressor shut down or not enough cooling at evaporator behaving like low charge which has its own complications if so. Known issues first then on to the final fix which I think lurks,

Don't even try to use the A/C with a bad fan clutch.

Thanks for input. I will repair fan clutch, keep ac off in meantime..Can you tell me what you think what the "lurking problem(s)" will be?

No, repair the glaring problems and then see what you have.

ericwarner: Too early just yet as said by all. You want to guess on this is only guessing till known good fan is operational. Just with the history that it can blow cool for a very short time would be either compressor shuts down or capacity to provide sufficient "condensed" refrigerant to evaporator is compromised.
Let's not take the college course in the whole thing till some known problems are fixed. As HT said - DON'T run A/C with the symptoms. The warning is because proper refrigerant flow is carrying the oils critical to compressor or can blow the whole show up trashing the system that probably isn't all burned out now but can't say that yet either,

Hello, been a while..thanks for your help thus far. So, I had the fan clutch repaired. I turned on a/c and it still does not seem to be working properly. It is colder now on the east coast so it is hard to tell when I turn it on, though the ac indicator light does not go on..I want to try and pinpoint obviously to determine if I should proceed in fixing myself, or take it to the shop..

Hello, thanks for help thus far. My last post was regarding help with my a/c in 2005 nissan xterra. The fan Clutch was bad and have since fixed it though the a/c does not work properly... When the blower is in position 1, the a/c works but when I up the blower it shuts off... I did run a/c when fan clutch was bad (did not know it was bad, check engine light did not come on..) Any thoughts as to why a/c does not operate?

What would the check engine light have to do with the fan clutch?
You may have severely damaged your compressor by running it with a bad fan clutch but your blower issues are either a blower switch or a blower resister, more likely the resister as you were already advised back in September.
