2005 Mazda 3 A/C Compressor failure Sign In

Hello All,
Thank you for taking the time to help. I am new to this website and hope it can assist me understand and verify that what I am being told is correct.
My 2005 Mazda 3 hatchback a/c compressor stopped working (75K miles) and caused the belt to burn and subsequently break. I researched prior to taking to mechanic to make sure it was not something I could do myself. I know a/c problems require a special skill, which I do not have. The mechanic states that the a/c compressor can only be purchased at the dealership because they do make an oem a/c compressor for my car. As instructed I took the car to the local dealership who informed me that my particular 2005 car has a particular a/c compressor that is delivered in multiple pieces and has to be assembled at the dealership (i.e. clutch is separate, etc.) Of course the cost of the particular a/c compressor is substantially more than the other a/c compressors used by mazeda 3s. I was quoted a cost for parts in the amount of $1,100.
My questions are: 1. Is it true that there is not an oem a/c compressor for a 2005 mazda 3?
2. Is it true that a 2005 mazda 3 could require an a/c compressor that does not come preassembled? Seems odd that most other cars have an assembled a/c compressor available.
3. Is $1,100 for an a/c compressor expensive?
Thank you in advance for you time and help.

Re: 2005 Mazda 3 A/C Compressor failure Sign In

I just picked any parts place and they had one OE, exact fit but $407.99 bucks for the 2.0 engine! It did come with required gaskets etc.

The issue is when they seize up like that it probably was self destructing for a while throwing debris thru the system. Not all the components can be cleaned out but require new parts. Not uncommon that they are frightfully expensive to repair properly.
You can Google out your own parts from large outlets but know that's a DIY price without markup. Shops are not likely to warranty a job if you bring your own parts.

More to this job than meets the eye,

T

Some compressors are sold with clutches and some are not. It's usually the dealer ones that are without.

Your compressor is made in the aftermarket but it is a little on the rare side and still a bit pricey.

Thank you for your help. I guess I will bite the bullet and get it done. One follow up question: is $250 for labor costs for installation of the ac compressor a fair price for the amount of work involved? I don't know how labor intensive it is. Again, thank you for your help.

That would depend on local labor rates and how much was done. Just to swap out the compressor and charge it could be that alone. Keep in mind the expense of equipment AND the knowledge to do it.

Just look at the top thread here on what it takes just to charge up a known good system - it's shocking.

I think that sounds fair,
