2005 Honda Civic a/c Compressor problem Sign In

Hello everyone. I am happy to find a forum where the people really look like they know what they are talking about instead of guessing all kind of stupid answers so thank you a lot all of you to make this forum running. I made a research on the forum before posting without any result to my problem but if there is already a similar post I am sorry about it. So my car is a 2005 Honda Civic engine 1.7 liter with 230000 KM and the problem is when I start the car the a/c work well but it stops working after 10-15 minutes it won't get back on even if I turn off the engine and restart it. I wait 3 to 4 hours, then I restart the car and it works again but only for 10 to 15 minutes. So I've tested it. I started the car and watch under the hood, after 10 minutes the compressor clutch disengages by itself and stops spinning and after a minute or so, the air starts to get warm. So is the clutch the problem? Do I have to change the entire compressor or can I change just the clutch?

Thank you guys

You would have to do some testing during the failure to determine if the clutch is still getting power when this happens or not. If it's not getting power, that opens up all kinds of other possibilities. I would highly suspect the temperature thermostat inside the evaporator case.

Thank you for a so fast reply Hammer time, your amazing. Ok, I will test the power during failure like you said but I've forget to tell you some information. I've been at Honda dealer last week to get the problem fix. They test for a leak and they said they change the «THERMOSWITCH» for 500 box and that not fix the problem so they want to change the entire compressor for almost 1000 box so I've said no and I've take my car out of there. So my question is; the thermoswitch they are change, is it the same thing as the temperature thermostat you talking about?
Sorry for those question, I am not a king in a/c stuff. So I will do the power test and I'll come back to you with the result.

Thank you again

Testing the computer for power at the compressor is probably going to be your limit. You have to have some equipment and be able to follow a wiring schematic after that.

This at the higher Kms now could if power tests OK be large air gap at the clutch. TMK, tight to get at to measure that gap if too large can lose it's hold to stay engaged as the magnetic force to pull in and stay engaged loses some power to do just that with increased heat. Should be an easy check for general should be ~ .020 and when over .030 is area for trouble to engage or stay engaged,

If you do find an excessive air gap, it will still mean a new compressor because the increase is due to wear in the clutch surface and insufficient coil power.

Just found too many variables for what's available out there but did find one entire clutch and coil assy separate from compressor available but would need to know exact application and compressor if this is the issue at all and may not be at all,

Thank you for everyting Hammer Time. I've did a test and the power still feeding the compressor during the issu so like you said the problem should be the clutch. Since I am not equiped properly to fix a clutch problem I guest my best move is to replace the entier compressor for a new one or maybe you think to something else.
Thanks again

The clutch coil is too weak to pull the clutch plate in. You might be able to buy some time by having the clutch plate shimmed closer if the gap is excessive but that is only a temp solution, even if it can be done and it will eventually need a whole compressor. Changing only a clutch will usually only be temporary also and when the compressor fails, it comes with a new clutch anyway.

Agree - If clutch gap or coil it probably needs to come out. Another year but too close to do in place. Go Brand New for whole assembly for the best life. Some total clutch + coils could cost about as much,

Thank you guys for everything. I will by a new compressor since I want to fix it for good and not temporary. But I want to thank you both for answering to my questions so fast.
Two thumbs up
Thank youSmile

Re: 2005 Honda Civic a/c Compressor problem Sign In

There are OHM tests for clutch coil which should be a clue that the magnetic power is available but how sure is questionable. You could know it's totally wrong.

That gap get larger just with time and use, throw in some gun rust and they get larger over time and use. Some (other vehicles) so common and easy to just pull one washer shim out you never hear of a problem again. They tend to work cold better that general heat.

That gap is just pulling in the outer plate such that compressor is "engaged" and when that outer plate is still the whole thing is just a big pulley holder.

Gap again: Just like a refrigerator magnet with too many papers (gap) that finally can't hold in a crude sense. If just weak and too much gap on the car a tap when empowered might kick it on. Not much room so you can get whatever you might tap on outer plate with thrown at you or make problems for that test.

Need you to make the decision based on how important the best job and longest chance of trouble free life of just that will be and still best results will be by a professional with the right equipment and know how.

Just know that the clutch and its parts are really separate from the compressor and its guts and operation as it is on the compressor. As said when it's OFF it's just a pulley in the belt system,
