2004 Tahoe AC driver side works intermittently. Sign In

I have a 2004 Chevy Tahoe LS, 2WD, 5.3 L engine, 105,000 miles. It has dual climate control. When the ac is engaged, passenger side is fine. However, the driver side blows hot air 75% of the time. When I turn the climate control off, wait 5 minutes, ac on the driver side just might blow cold air. The cabin vents just blows hot air all the time no matter how I have it set. I have changed all the little fuses that relates to ac, that is as far as I know. I would like to know what possible defects I might be told when I take it to an ac shop. I know a little bit about cars, but clueless on ac. I would really appreciate any info. Thanks.

The temperature is controlled by the use of an air mix door that is operated by an electric motor/actuator. This door can be jammed or the actuator can be inoperative or have stripped plastic gears internally.

The driver's side is blowing hot air like the heater is on or is it just warm like the ac isn't on? If you turn the heater control all the way to hot, does the vents blow hot heater air?

AC is on but the driver and cabin vents are blowing hot air like the heater is on. When the heater control is set @ 80, all vents blow hot air.

When you switch from hot to cold on your temperature selection with the blower on high, you should be able to hear the sound of the air changing. If you don't hear any change in the sound of the air, you need to follow HT's recommendations.

I hear the sound of the air changing when iI turn the AC on. At the moment, driver side is working but the cabin vents are still blowing hot air like the heater is on.

Ok, I am going to go technical on you.

When you take it to the shop they are going to connect a scan tool up and interface the HVAC control module and watch the desired and actual blend door positions for the driver and passenger side. If they match when commanded to move, then the door actuators are functioning. They will also check for trouble codes being stored.

If the doors are functioning properly, the next thing they are going to do is recover the refrigerant and weigh it to see if you have the right capacity in the system. If the refrigerant is low, you can have one side colder than the other on a dual climate control system.
