2004 Chevy Tahoe Z71 V8 5.3L 116000 mi

A/C would only blow cold when in drive, pressure showed overfilled by over 20 pounds for ambient temperature. A/C has not been charged since I purchased the vehicle. After removing gauges (which contained a high & low pressure gauges), high side port pin remained depressed causing system to discharge. Pin was replaced & system was fully charged. Pressure showed with in acceptable range for high/low to what ambient temperature was. Now whether in park, braked, or driving, I only receive hot air but the compressor does engage and remains active until A/C button is turned off or blow motor is turned off.

It was suggested to change the orifice filter, any other suggestions? I have a friend who just does charging and recovery for vehicle refrigerant so if I need to drain the system it is not a problem.

A/C is not as simple to diagnose as some people try to believe. It requires extensive experience and on-site inspection.

What are your high and low side pressures when the compressor is engaged?

You can't charge an ac system by pressure on these vehicles. They have to be charged by weight.

If it is something I can fix I would like to as I do not have the money to take it in. As far as the pressure goes then I may be incorrect on my verbiage, my buddy had the SNAP on A/C set, I'm not sure when the numbers were. But I originally purchased one of the do it yourself refill cans with a gauge, the second I hooked it up the needle buried itself.

You need your buddies gauges to see what the pressure is. The suicide kit will destroy an ac system.

Your going to have a problem because you don't know how much refrigerant is actually in the system. You need to take it to a shop that does ac repairs and have them recover and recharge the system to the correct weight. They can diagnose the system also and tell you what the problem is. From there you can decide if you want to tackle the repair yourself and then later have them charge up and check the system for you. It would be cheaper to pay a diagnostic fee than having $800 worth of damage to your ac system using the wrong equipment and procedures.

Thumper85 - as said about those cans with a gauge - DS called it "suicide kit" and they are also known as death kits. Haven't seen one but might be out there that is pure refrigerant and if you look probably contains other stuff - sealer being the real problem.

Gauges on those things and others like it are notoriously inaccurate. WallyWorld had a $1 tent sale now some time ago and some had real refrigerant and a hose with gauge and I bought out all and came with the junk. Checked with real gauges and OMG so far off it was dangerous.,

Even if pure with a gauge I still don't like it and they should not be sold IMO. Dispose of that properly,

T
