2003 mercury marquis. a/c blow out of vents until you accerlate, then defaults to defroster vents, checked vacuum a EATC and seems weak comming in, checked lines under hood , so far nothing, a/c will blow out of dash vents , but if you switch to defroster or floor, a/c will not return to dash vents unless you turn off the system and restart it, then it will blow again out of the dash vents, provided you dont acceralate, could use some help, thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "weak" vacuum? Can you get a # for that? Vacuum is supposed to be the last best the intake manifold can make and stored in a usually plastic container w a one way valve. As you accelerate manifold vacuum would drop so ducts that are controlled by vacuum rely on stored vacuum to stay put.

IDK for sure but where vacuum switches at control head may be leaking and builds up just enough if put off for a while like you said and try again. You might even hear it. Well held vacuum will or many do still change the airflow request even when engine is off but ign on run position.

Not much help for you at the moment but interested in this weak vacuum and why. Manifold actual vacuum should be 18+ on some at idle,

T

I appreciate your help, by weak vacuum , I mean about 6 inches on the gauge. was wondering if it should be higher or is restricted down before it reaches the control head, again, thanks.

You should be seeing the same vacuum reading at the control head that you see at the manifold and that should be over 16" for a healthy engine.

Smoke test should reveal the leak and make it easy to find. That's unless you see something visual.

Just in case you don't have a $1200 smoke machine, you can get a little bit of rubber hose and cut the plastic line at various points to take readings to help pinpoint the leak. Use hose to splice it back together. Look for a storage tank also that could be broken or disconnected,.

Before you go hacking up the lines, where are you taking your reading from? If you are at the back of the panel be careful because there is a connection right at the base of the center of the dash that you might of pulled apart getting at the vacuum plug on the back of the control panel.
