2001 silverado a/c wont shut off Sign In

I have a 2001 silverado with 81.000 miles on it . the problem is that the a/c will not turn off . this is just a standerd a/c system with no automatic temp control , when i turn the a/c on it comes on just fine everything working just fine including the fan speeds. now when i push the a/c button to turn the a/c off the a/c light turns off but the compressor keeps running. now if i pull over and turn the truck off ( with the a/c light in off pisition) and then restart the truck the a/c will be off. have any ideas ?

The compressor clutch relay may be sticking closed. Try shutting the compressor off and if it continues to run, remove the relay. If it shuts off them, test the socket for trigger ground coming from the PCM to energize it.

It's in the relay box in the engine compartment.

im going out to check it now. that would be an easy fix if the relay is bad

I remover a/c relay and ohmed pins 87 to 30 and the contacts are open . I read 14 volts across the holes that pins 85 and 86 go in which would close 87 to 30 which tells me the relay is good. that would have been to easy. do you have any more ideals ?

If you are reading voltage between pins 85 and 86, that means the computer is intentionally activating the relay. Many of these newer vehicles are programmed to operate most of the time to remove moisture from the air in both heating and cooling situations. The computer controls the relay through a ground signal on either 85 or 86, I don't recall which, whichever one doesn't have power. The only other possibility is that wire shorted to ground somewhere.
