My heat works great gets extremely hot but only when my RPMs are at or above 2000rpm..... When I stop or let of the gas it goes ice cold, could that be a thermostat? What should I try first?

How is the coolant level in the radiator? That symptom is usually caused by low coolant level.

Those year s-10 and blazers were horrible about Dex-cool sludging up. They are also bad about intake gaskets leaking. If the level is low, you might want to get hold of a coolant pressure tester and see if there are any leaks.

What coolant do you recommend?

Prestone Dexcool and water. Mix it so it is 50% Dex-cool and 50% water.

Don't forget to have it checked for leaks. Some leaks won't show up unless the system is under pressure. They make a tool that pressurizes the system, so you can find those leaks. If the coolant is really old (more than 5 years), you should flush the system out and install a new radiator cap.

DS right on target as usual. Elusive leaks, meaning you aren't seeing them on this could be water pump only when running and clever to leak while driving not a puddle you see. Can leak anywhere but look under side at a vent hole of water pump with a mirror as needed - should be dry and show no coolant stains there or evidence........
