2001 Silverado heater won't shut off Sign In

Hello, I have a 2001 Silverado and the other day the blower just came on all by itself. It was sorta creapy! The switch is in the off position and the blower is blowing high. I still have full control of the temperature, meaning I can run the AC or the heat . I just can't shut it off.

The major issue is that it stays running even with the engine off. I had to pull the fuse under the hood to shut it off.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

If it’s the 30 amp H/AC fuse that you’re having to remove from the under hood fuse panel, then the problem is likely the blower motor resistor/relay assembly. The first three speeds of the blower motor receive their power from a different source then high speed. This (lower speed) source voltage is feed through a combination of resistors to achieve the desired fan speed. When the switch is turned to the high speed setting a relay is energized opening the circuit for the first three speeds and at the same time closing the circuit for high speed; bypassing the resistors and applying full system voltage to the fan motor. This relay is probably stuck or the points in the relay are welded together. Yes I said points; you would think with all of today’s electronics they would find something better then a set of breaker points that have been around since they discovered electricity. LOL
You’ll find this resistor/relay assembly bolted to the heater plenum close to the blower motor.

Dan ,

Thanks for the great advice! Yes it is the stuck in high speed and I did have to pull the 30AMP fuse. I will look into the relay you mention as soon as I find the heater plenum and blower motor!

Can you help a bit more? Under the dash - or under the hood?????

Under the dash; turn the fan on and follow your ears. Wink
The thing that’s making all the noise is likely the blower motor. Shocked
You may need to remove a knee pad under the right side of the dash to actually see the motor. Once you find it you’ll also see a purple electrical wire plugged into the motor; follow it to a connector which should be within 1 foot or less of the motor; that should be the resistor/relay assembly. The resistor assembly is held to the plenum by two hex head screws 7mm or 9/32 in size.
