Went to use the heat and defrost the other morning- and no heat. engine gets to temp and fluids are full. I used to be able to hear coolant trickeling in the core but not now.
The core lines are side by side which one is the outlet side? Any suggestions?

You really shouldn't hear the coolant flowing. It may be low on coolant and that must be verified at the radiator not just the recovery tank. If low then the question is why? GM had trouble with the Dexcool in some vehicles so if it looks grungy get it flushed out now. If gucked up it could have plugged the heater core. At the core usually there are two different size hoses and the larger is the outlet side. Also - I'm too lazy to go look but is there a shut off in the inlet hose that may have stayed shut?

all I can see are 2 lines at the fire wall going straight to the pump and manifold. both same size.

Ok: Just looked at a 97 C/K 5.7 with A/C and the two were different sizes with no flow controller and the outlet was on the driver's side. Hose sizes should be 5/8th in and 3/4in out. Not sure how much it would matter if they were reversed but it could effect the engine's ability to maintain a stable temp which you say is fine.

Was the coolant full?

coolant is full. I just pulled both lines off core. flushed clear both directions. not plugged at all. Started engine for a sec and had a good flow out the hose.
Whats next temp controller. how does that work, Brief rundown if you can!
