Hi all.

The blower on my 1998 Ford Taurus just blew. I had my husband take it to the car wash today b/c we were supposed to show it tonight to sell! So, he's driving home and the AC stops blowing.

Everything else is working. The dash lights up, radio works, A/C controls all visable and appear to be working, just no AIR! I'm praying it's just a fuse but they look alright. Does anyone have any idea on how to get this fixed. Also, we dont have the owner's manual!! If it's a relay sensor does anyone know where its located for the A/C blower? And..........if it is MUST I go through the whole diagnostic thing or should I just replace it and see if it works?

Sorry to get so complicated but I dont want to get ripped off! I'm hoping it's something simple or, if not, you guys can help me simplify it. Thanks so much for any advice!

Cheapest thing to do first is to see if there is current at the plug on the blower motor. If there is no current go to this site http://www.autozone.com/.../repairInfoPages.htm
Fuse 9 under the dash is a 30 amp for the blower motor. If there is current at the blower connector, replace the blower. Check to see if the blower works on any speed at all. If it works on high and none of the others, replace the blower resistor.

Way2, First I cant thank you enough for answering my post. Next, to show you how ignorant I am, how do I check to see if there is a current at the plug. Where IS the plug ? Where is the blower motor? Crazy I have no owners manual! I'm so sorry to be such an idiot but I'm determined not to go into an autoshop because I know how badly I can get ripped off (They'll just say it's the compressor and charge me a fortune because it's summer! I am so disgusted with this.)

Now, I can find fuse 9 under the dash (that much I believe I can figure out!) but that sentance is sort of just hanging out there. Do you mean check that fuse and that's where it's located, if it's bad replace it. it it's good go to the connector issues?

Then, are you also saying there should be no current at the blower connector, if there is replace it? "If there is current at the blower connector, replace the blower." (emphasis, mine.) I do understand the last sentance, at least I can tell you that. How to replace the blower is a whole other story. If it needs replacing I can probably go to auto zone and pick up the part and get someone to replace it for me. Rather than get screwed for parts and labor.

Thanks so much. I'm sorry to be so stupid but I am really trying to learn. Also, do you know where I can find a .pdf of the 98 Taurus dealers manual or at least this page, or do I have to buy one over e-bay. All I'm trying to do is sell this car! Unsure

Thanks again, really,

Anne

Also, if anyone here lives in mid- Georgia, please let me know! Smile

way2, I'm sorry, I just went to your autozone link. Perfect. It was down before so I didnt know what it was for. Now I can see where the fuse is located for the blower motor. I'll check to see if it's blown. Now, if it's blown, can I just replace? I'm trying to put all the pieces together! Please bear with me, you've been such a huge help. Please be patient. I'm 2 young 2 know what you know! Blush

Hi Anne,

Yes pull that fuse -- little tool should be in the box or cover made of white or black plastic. if it's blown replace it with the exact same type only -- color and number on it. (blown you can see that a burned wire is inside it but swap it anyway) There should be a spare in there tooSmile If it all works again that's it and stop there. If it doesn't work pull same fuse again and see if it blew right away and we'll go from there.

To be nice to new owner, buy another new spare -- you may need to get a package with a few.

Good luck. Hope Way2Old knows exact location of the motor which I think is under the dash but could be a bear to get at and replace if thats needed.

THIS IS NOT YOUR COMPRESSOR.

I do know of a trusted A/C person in Acworth, GA -- I think that's NW GA but I'd have to check -- have the phone and address if you want, T

See if this helps any--- Have lots of fun with it. The best way to check for a blown fuse, is to buy a cheap test light. Turn ignition to the on position, clip little light to a metal bolt and touch pointed end on the little metal places on the fuse. There is small holes on each side of the fuse rating. (5--10--20--etc)

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Open glove compartment door, then release retainers and allow glove compartment door to pivot downward.
  3. Remove recirculation duct support bracket-to-cowl attaching screw.
  4. On models equipped with electronic Automatic Temperature Control System, remove screw securing electrical connector bracket to recirculation duct. Disconnect the three connectors, then remove the bracket.
  5. On all models, remove vacuum connection to recirculation door vacuum motor.
  6. Remove six recirculation duct-to-evaporator or heater case attaching screws, Fig. 34, then lower duct from between instrument panel and case and remove from vehicle.
  7. Disconnect blower motor electrical connector.
  8. Remove blower wheel attaching clip and the wheel.
  9. Remove blower motor attaching screw, then the blower motor from evaporator or heater case.
  10. Reverse procedure to install.

Guys, thank you. This is great information. I went out yesterday with my diagram to find the fuse but the diagram was for the wrong year's Ford Taurus, so I have to go back and try to find the legend for the 1998 (autozone is down right now).

Tom, I used to live in Metro WestBoston (Marlborough), I just bought a Volvo from up there (Southborough) and had my dad drive it down to me in GA. I'm not sure where Acworth is but I'm in mid-GA. I'll have to check the map. I would love it if he was close by.

This is my first American car, this Taurus. It's all they drive down here. I hate to say it but American cars kind of get what they deserve. Everything breaks! Thank you for assuring me that this is not the compressor. If I drove into a repair shop that's exactly what they'd tell me.

So, I need to find the 1998 legend, then I'm going back under the dash but it's too cold out there today so it may have to wait a day or so. Again, thanks guys. This site is the best. If I can figure this out it will save me a fortune....anyone know anyone who wants to buy a 1998 Ford Taurus, btw? great condition only the stupid blower just went. It might just need a fuse! Wink

You guys, it is fixed! LaughIt was a blown relay switch. I went down to Autozone, bought the replacement and for $10.00 my problem is fixed. I could not have done it without you. I feel so cool. Thank you all.
Next problem will be blown battery on a Dodge Caravan. My dear friend in a fit of macho tried to jump the battery and instead blew it up. Now it smokes when I put on the new battery.

I will re-post that problem in another thread. Until now, I cant thank you enough! I'm really hoping I can become a car junky!

Glad you are in biz with the Taurus.

Acworth (Ackworth?) GA, 30102 should be on MapQuest or GoogleMaps or something out there and you should be able to get exact distance from your Zip code, T

Hey Anne. Go to this site www.fleet.ford.com click on the maintenance tab, then click owners manuals. Enter your information. When the owners manual loads, go to Roadside Emergencies and scroll down till you see the fuse panels. Good luck.
