1997 Plymouth Voyager overheating with a/c on Sign In

1997 Plymouth Voyager at 220,000 miles

A few months ago my a/c stopped cooling. I took it to a repair shop and they said that the system needed to be recharged. A/C ran fine until a couple of weeks ago when it stopped cooling again. A couple of days ago it overheated within a mile of my home. The coolant tank looked empty, so we refilled it and it ran fine. However, the coolant continues to drop slowly (I think it is when it is running as opposed to sitting....no antifreeze in parking area), so we figured it must be a leak. However, the a/c is still not working. Now when the a/c is turned on, I hear a squealing sound and then the car begins to overheat again....even with enough antifreeze. Is it possible that the engine overheating and a/c not working are connected? Is there something inexpensive I can try, or is this an all-out mechanic radiator and a/c system check problem?

Re: 1997 Plymouth Voyager overheating with a/c on Sign In

There's a host of things to check out.

Is/are fans running underhood? Belt properly tight? While coolant is thought full does it behave for a while? A/C making noise could be belt or perhaps the electric fan makes the noise trying to run or the compressor itself is failing.

Leak: Pressure test should show where. Water pump and other items can leak while running and not at rest.

The connection if at all of A/C not working, making noise, and overheating suggests the fans more than anything else from what I see here but a lot should be checked out.

I know you want the A/C to work but pay attention to this overheating first as that's an engine killer,

T
