The a/c compressor in my '95 Lumina 3.1 has been making awful noises for a while (a/c does not work), and noises are getting worse--I'm afraid it will seize and burn the belt off. Can I use a smaller belt to bypass the a/c? I am trying this, but am stuck as to what the new routing would be without causing the water pump to spin the opposite direction. I bought a belt for a 1990 Lumina 3.1 without a/c, since the belt for the 1990 with a/c was the same as the 1995.

I don't know if the belt routing diagram will show below but it doesn't look like this will work without the compressor and its clutch in place as the pulley. I'm guessing that this is the clutch bearing that is shot and not the compressor bushings which would only be a problem with compressor engaged and if so just unplug it. Depending on the damage now you might be able to just replace the bearing or the clutch (used is ok especially if you don't care if the A/C can work) or they make a dummy bracket that takes the place of the whole compressor and is just a pulley. Clutch alone does not require removing refrigerant if any left in system to replace unless it can't be done while in the car. I don't remember for that car whether you can get clutch off or not while in place, T
