1995 Ford Ranger 2.3L A/C Help Sign In

95' Ranger 2.3L 175K. The A/C working great before any problems arose. A/C stopped blowing cold air. Compressor started cycling. Check today ambient air at 90 degrees. I had to jump the low pressure switch to cycle. Low side 55psi to 25 psi when cycling. High side 120 psi to 135 when cycling. Cycling was 2 seconds ON and 4 seconds OFF. When I rev to 2K rpms the only change was that it cycled quicker. I observed a hissing sound coming from the high pressure fitting valve when I took the cap off. The cylinder looking thing that the valve sits on top of looks like it has some dried oil around it. Also, there is a wired connector coming off this cylinder. It look like I can replace this line as it runs from the compressor to the top of the condenser. Couple of questions. Can I repair this and how? Also, is the orifice tube located on this line? What does that cylinder thingy do? Thanks

You need to knock it off with the jumping switches or you'll be buying a compressor soon. That switch is there for a reason. It sounds like you have a leak in the system and you need to have it leak checked and repair whatever is leaking and then evacuate and recharge with a weighed charge.

I appreciate your concerns. Thanks. I found a leak and its at the high pressure valve. Can this valve be remove and replace or would I have to replace the whole line? The line runs from the condenser to the compressor and then to the Dryer where the low pressure switch is. Its one piece and very expensive around $180.

The shraeder can be replaced. Most of them just thread in.

Here are a couple different types

The Schrader valves can be replaced. Outside chance it's a ball valve and that should be replaceable also. The cap is really used as a final seal not just to keep dirt out but most shouldn't leak - Schrader especially.

If this continued for a few hours or less audibly it would be empty by now.

This being fast to go low on you if any pressure left at all plain soapy water would reveal it for certain not unlike finding a leak in a tire but know if Schrader it's larger than for typical tires and tool readily available,

PS: Wouldn't matter but I've been spelling "Schrader" wrong for ages. It's the inventor's name - August Schrader

Ball valves suck. Nothing like pulling off the high side hose after charge and getting a ball valve blow off. Who was the idiot that designed that glorious feat of engineering?

It's a ball valve I guess. When you look down inside the valve there is a black piece of rubber and under that it looks to be a ball that is spring loaded. The problem i'm having is that it seems to be on there really good and i'm afraid it might break or i might damage the line. Also, I'm not finding that valve on any ones parts list.

May want to call the store. I know the guy. Out of Phoenix, AZ. Warren will likely answer the phone to verify the exact right part or may say there is now a replacement that's more dependable. Pic of parts look like this and I can't separate just the one valve so you see them all and tools involved............... available at the same page.

If you call just know it's Mountain Time during Daylight savings in AZ. Hope that helps - cheap part by the listing and I have no interest in where you find it. I'd start at NAPA here for such a small item,

PS: Mods - I have total permission to deal with that place at this site by owner.......Do so vs verse also..........

It's just a replaceable valve assembly. The old one threads out and a new one in. You can get it at any parts store that sells A/C part for a couple dollars. You don't have to call anybody out of state.

I already gave you a picture of it.

Thanks. I did find it today at Advance Auto Parts. I grabbed it with channels locks and came off with no problems. I'll be working on it in the morning.
