1994 Camry A/C starts cold then blows hot Sign In

I have a 1994 Camry LE. For about a month now when I start the car the A/C blows cold and then slowly gets warmer and blows warm until I turn the car off and let it sit for a long while usually over night. I took it to a shop yesterday and they vacuumed out the system and refilled it, but the low and high pressure where not correct so they repeated the process with the same results. They asked me to take the car back today so that another mech could look at it. Finally they said that the expansion valve and dryer needed to be replaced. When I called around to other shops everybody acted like you could not just replace those parts. So I picked it up and took it to another shop. The 2nd shop says that I need to replace the compressor, expansion valve, and the dryer. So my question is do all of these parts need to be replaced? Is it possible for the expansion valve or dryer to go out without issues with the compressor? Everywhere I read says that you should replace everything when the compressor is bad, but I can't find anything about the other parts going bad on their own? Any advice would be appreciated before I spend a ton of money.

If the compressor is actually bad, yes it will contaminate the rest of the system with metal particles but I'm suspicious why one shop said it needed a compressor without even looking at the car. Yes, there are situations where you would change just the dryer and expansion valve but they would have nothing to do with a compressor. AC is very difficult to diagnose properly and you need someone that specializes in it. Most general repair shops don't know as much as they think they do.

Well the second shop did look at the car, I took it there for a second opinion, but I had already talked to them on the phone and told them what the first shop had said. If the expansion valve and dryer need replacing, but the compressor is fine any suggestions on what else could cause them to go bad or do they do it on their own? Also are specialized shops more expensive then general repair or do they run about the same?

No, they aren't more expensive, they just know what they are doing and don't guess like many other shops.
I can't tell you anything without a lot of information and test results. It requires a lot of observation and knowledge to diagnose AC properly.

Butterfly - this is a specialty area and many shops just don't touch A/C as it's expensive to have test equipment AND the know how. It's hard and thing can fool the best out there sometimes.

I suggest finding a shop that really concentrates on it. None of it is cheap and you have kind of an odd problem so time to test things out could get up there IMO,
