The air conditioner runs like normal however the air does not come out cold. took it to the shop and they charged it but after a month the same thing happened. took it back and they said it has a leak in the condenser. the brackets that it is welded on with have broken so they think that is where it is leaking. I guess my question is if this is something I can fix myself by just replacing the condenser and if I have to take it to them if I do replace the part so they can recharge the system. I have done minor work on cars but will have help with this from my father, however neither of us have experience working on air conditioners. I would rather not pay to more than the car was bought for to fix the a/c but it only has 76,000 miles on it. thank you thank you thank you for any help/suggestions you can give!

If system is opened up it will require a proper vacuum and recharge when finished with the repair. If this car uses the origina r-12 (freon) it is a bit more expensive but saves the cost of retrofitting so ask about that.

It about can't be real cheap even with a known problem spot. Ask if that can be repaired or must be replaced with new.

With whatever this welding braket thing is could make this more of a problem now. Some condensers may only come out with tons of other stuff taken out of the way and some cars have welded radiator supports such that parts will only remove from the underside which really makes it troublesome for a DIYer to get a car high enough.

No matter what the aggrevation and expense of the fix for the leak entails the proper vac and charge is mandatory. Ask about prices - I can't guess with some welded bracket that may be a real show stopper,

T
