1991 Caprice 5.0L Compressor Install Sign In

Replaced the original GM R4 compressor , today . It used o-rings to seal the lines to the compressor body .

The new R4 compressor uses sealing washers . I put the gold / brass / thin one on the suction line . Also came with red and green sealing washers for the high pressure line . I used the green / thick one . Did not use either the thick or thin insert ? Could not figure them out ?

Also replaced the accumulator dryer . It only came with one new o-ring . Had to re-use one of the old o-rings . :-(

Vacuumed the system down & I have a leak . :-(

Used Nylog Blue on all o-rings and sealing washers .

Tomorrow I will try to get some new o-rings for the accumulator . Did I mess up on the sealing washers ?

I have not put any refrigerant , into the system , yet . I used oil with UV die . May have to pressure up the system , enough to bring the compressor on . Ant use the little UV penlite to try to trace down the leak or leaks ?

What would be the chance the vacuum leak could be the new compressor shaft seal ? That it has not " seated " to the shaft , yet ?

Thanks ,
Wyr
God bless

They gave you an assortment of varying thickness sealing washers to cover different applications. It should also have come with extensions for the tubing itself. You have to select the combination that allows the manifold fitting to sit flat and level.

I hope you did more than just slap a compressor on there, assuming the old one had a mechanical failure and not just a leak. Something made the original fail and you need to find that cause and the debris from the old compressor likely ruined the condenser also.

The old compressor was a belly leaker .

From my short amount of research , on the internet , so far , the general consensus is the inserts are rarely used ?

You're right. A lot of people don't use them but it is recommended when the largest spacer is used. They can be hard to install too.

The inserts had a " step " machined on one side , of a smaller diameter . Does the " step " go into the inside of the high pressure line ?

I could not determine if that was the direction it went ? Or if the " step " should be positioned toward the body of the compressor ?

What function / benefit does the insert provide ?

Thanks , :-)

Yes, it inserts into the pipe but it is a very tight fit and has to be forced in without damaging the aluminum. You have to use a very flat, straight surface to push with.

Swapped sealing washers , several times . And used the inserts . No improvement .

Changed o-rings at the accumulator . No luck .

Put some gas in it and let it run a little while . Tomorrow I hope to start looking for traces of UV dye .

God bless
