I have a 1989 Pontiac 6000 LE 2.5L 4cylinder and the car all of a sudden starts to overheat while being drive after about 3-4 miles. Engine coolant overflows into bottle. I changed the thermostat thinking that it hasnt been replaced in awhile and problem persists. Engine has enough coolant, and radiator fan both work fine. My dad seems to think the radiator is not clogged or doesn't have any blockage, but then again hes not a mechanic. I was thinking maybe water pump because i'm not sure if there is any circulation. CAN ANTONE PLEASE HELP ME????

Take it to a shop and have them check for exhaust in the radiator. That is a quick and accurate test for a bad head/gasket.

Unfortunately Steve has probably nailed this to a head gasket. The air in system will quickly cause an overheat and problem. They don't heat and system will bubble over as was said quickly and then be too hot.

You could save some expense (possibly) by tending to this now, T

Bad timing being Christmas but surely you need the car, T again....

do you know if it could be the valve cover gasket instead, because my dad had mentioned that he thought it was leaking oil a little bit?

Certainly a valve cover can leak but should have nothing to do with the overheating. The head gasket has to seal.... exhaust pressures, compression pressures, anti-freeze and oil all at once and perfectly or there is trouble, T
