1989 GMC low blower motor volume Sign In

1989 GMC 1/2 ton pickup. Got it about 2 years ago. Has heat and A/C. Recharged the A/C yesterday. Output air is very cold. But the volume of air out any of the vents, both heat or A/C is very low.

Take the interior a long time to warm up in winter, and may never really get warm. Haven't used the A/C, but recharged it and drove around the block. Same deal, gets 30 degree air at dash vent, but low volume and interior doesn't really get cool.

Just got the blower removed (great place to put that last screw !!). I was hoping to find a mouse nest, but all looks clear, as much as I can see. Used to be a farmer's truck and stored in a barn. Blower seems to put out a lot of air when out of the housing.

The routing of air does change when switching desired output, floor or dash. DOn't see any air leaks inside or under hood.

Thanks.

Couple thoughts on this:

There may be inadequate but some vacuum which would be stored in that round ball under the hood. I would think it might improve going down hill though.

Also the diverter doors in the distribution housing might not be doing full travel and you might be able to feel them move and see if they go full travel

If you don't get all the fan speeds it could be a resistor or the switch itself, T

Oh........ One more. If you really see 30F even it's too cold and will ice up and block air flow but it would take a while. If you see water dripping with A/C on you should be ok

I thought getting the blower out was something, but putting it back was twice as hard. And now of course, the fan is rubbing on somethign on high. I phoned the local GMC dealer. He wanted to see it and get a service order signed as soon as possible. But he did mention the actuator. When I had the glove box removed, I could hear the three relays (?) on top clicking with changes between heat and A/C.

Thanks for the advice.

Does that mean you are sending this job out now? I know it's a pill but it will be easier the second time Frown. Did the replacement look totally the same? Some come with the cage and some you swap them over.

I hate to see you go thru more expense when you tried so hard, T

There wasn't anything wrong with the blower. Just re-installing it was a bear and now it is rubbing on something. The book I have says to "merely" loosen the bracket on the sidewall that holds the dash and lift it up for easy access to the blower. That sure doesn't work. There isn't any moving that dash without a crane.

I suppose when I shoved/forced/wiggled the blower and cage back in, I probably bent something. Can't afford to take it to a pro, so I will have to live with it as is, I'm afraid.
