Have a 07 uplander with 3.9engine and 70k miles. When I bought the van I did try the a/c I could here a hiss from the vent, and it was very noticeable and when I turned the a/c off, the hiss would slowly go away. I assume there is a leak on the high side. The previous owner show me a receipt where the dealer looked at the a/c and found no problem.

I have no a/c now unless I charge and that will last for about 10 minutes. So How hard is it to get to the system components, does the dash have to come out.

I have done some work on systems before, but certainly not an expert. Looking for some tech advice thanks

This is not a job for you. Diagnosing A/C requires a lot of "hands on" experience. You have a major leak that needs to be found.

The Dumplander has an expansion valve. If the system gets low on refrigerant from a leak somewhere, you'll hear hissing through the expansion valve that is bolted to the evaporator. Doesn't mean there is a leak making that noise. You need to take it to a shop that can recover what is left in the system and then dye and recharge it or sniff it out. Don't try recharging it yourself with a suicide can kit. You over or undercharge and you'll end up paying huge bucks later on.

Well I was hoping for some technical advice specific to the uplander. A/c systems of this vintage are not that difficult to fix. I have recharged many systems as well as found leaks using dye. Nothing to be scared of. I guess I know more than most here. Oh well I bit the bullet and get the repair manual to find out how to get the evaporator out. I have an uplander I use for work which does not have the hiss. So may just be the oring, which might mean the high side is over pressure.

Man, the fools just keep coming.....................................

You're just the smartest guy I ever met. If it's hissing that bad, just put a bucket under the dash and catch the leaking refrigerant.

Well, good luck with that. Let us know how things turn out.

Don't understand why an evaporator that causes an audible hissing sound from a leak at the core would only hiss when the system is turned on. There is more pressure in the evaporator when the system is turned off than when the system is running. I guess you know more about AC systems, so maybe you have an explanation for that.

I just had a BMW 325i last week that was hissing out of the vents and it was because the system was low on charge and the expansion valve was hissing. I noticed a couple of wet o rings at the condenser connections. It wasn't because of a leak in the core or the expansion valve causing the hissing sound. Recovered 3 ounces, replaced the o rings, dyed, vacuum and recharged to the specified weight and the hissing sound went away and it blew cold. Told the customer to drive it and bring it back later on to see if there are any other leaks.

That's the difference. We are the pros.... you just think you are and that is dangerous. Everybody thinks A/C is just a piece of cake............. until everything goes to hell, and it will eventually.

The thing that speaks for success in A/C repair is not the result when you finish, it's the result 6 months from when you finish. That's the point that separates the pros from the wannabes. Anybody can make a car cold for a day or two.............. well....... maybe some can't even do that.

Never said I was a pro but if you don't learn you stay still. I have been very sucsessfull repairing ac systems on various cars, there are not many components and if you know what each does and have gauges its relatively easy to troubleshoot. The only difference it will take me longer. now 2010 systems and newer are a different story...

I spit my coffee out on that one. ............

Sure, there is real easy, obvious stuff and then there is stuff you will never figure. I have seen many a DIYer turn a $500 job into a $1500 job because they thought they had all the answers.

I think it's time to lock this up and let you enjoy your other forums.

You guys crack me up. I learned EVERYTHING ever known about A/C in a week (right) let's call it right MVAC = Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning vs HVAC.

Go get a death kit at Wally World and wonder why it just cost you perhaps THREE thousand bucks!

Just a locked and amusing thread now,

T
