Hello all, I recently bought a used (60K mi) '05 Nox. It exhibits the same problems others have reported here; namely, the ac blows cold at >2000 engine rpm and somewhat warm at <2000 rpm (or at idle). Both radiator fans run normally and the compressor does not cycle, thus I believe this indicates a weak compressor that's needing replacement to restore low-rpm suction and adequate cooling. So my question is: those of you have have had a weak compressor replaced-

a) Did this fix the issue;
b) For how long;
c) Were any other items needed (other than compressor & R134) for the fix.
d) I found a source that has OEM compressors for $400 shipped. In addition to the unit, what is a reasonable & proper "out-the-door" cost for the entire job (I realize this will vary by zip, but a ballpark would help)?
thanks,
Jeff

Your going to have to get us some pressure readings before we can advise you on whether the compressor is the problem or not. I need both high and low readings both at idle and 2000 RPMs and then I can give you a good idea if that is the problem or not.

Pressures needed as Hammer said. Just know ~65% of all low or no cooling problems are low charge and a leak to be fixed. Compressor is probably variable rate and might be fine - if quiet still get this fixed asap as the low charge if that shows to be so will disallow movement of oil that lubes compressor and you could end up with a nasty bill for what might be a simple leak.

It's too new for me to know what the common problems are for this. Many are leaks at compressor's shaft seal or debris has hit condenser. That won't heal and soon you'd be without any cooling.

Gotta get the pressures asap and can't guess on costs without knowing what's wrong yet,

T

Hammer, Tom, thanks.

Ambient temp 85F

W/ my helper on the throttle, here's what I got with ac on max/recirc:

Engine off: 105 psi
Engine on, idle: 65 psi; gauge needle steady; temp at coldest vent 70F
at 2000 rpm: 45 psi; gauge needle steady; temp at coldest vent 49F
at 2500 rpm: 35 psi; gauge needle moving a bit; temp at coldest vent 47F

Also, looking under the car tonite, I can see a single drop of oil/dye pooled on the bottom on the compressor. Therefore the previous owner knew of the problem and had a leak test done (which, of course, was their motivation for selling that they didn't disclose). Judging from my garage floor, this is an extremely slow leak and absolutely coming from the compressor (I used an UV light to verify).

So it seems I have 2 issues: a leaky, weak compressor.

I found an OEM compressor online, but the same outfit didn't have the accumulator/drier.

So what do you think, fellas?

thx in advance for the help.

Jeff

What are the corresponding high pressure readings to those low side readings?

Sorry; don't know. I'm not sure where the high side is and not sure I wanna try that one- keeping in mind I don't have a true manifold gauge and am using the cheapo gauge that came w/ the R134 recharge bottle. I would think, tho, it's fairly accurate on the low side.

That's the first thing you need to do is throw that gauge away. You need a set of professional gauges if you want to diagnose this properly. The relationship of high and low is an integral piece of info in diagnosing this problem. Just from what you have told me it sounds like you need a compressor for leak reasons but I can't tell you if that is also your cooling problem without all the pressure readings.

Agreed- but a set of professional gauges will run about $90... for a single use. Which coincidentally is the diagnostic fee from the local shop here, and they likely know more about what they're doing than I would.

Thus, if what I've supplied is insufficient then perhaps it would be prudent to go ahead and stick the nerw parts on with their 12-mo warranty.

My original thread topic, however, was: for those that had the same Equinox blow warm/ blow cold problem, did a new compressor & drier provide a fix.

Hopefully, I'll hear from some folks that went this route.

Thx for the replies.

Jeff

Nobody can possibly know if a compressor is going to fix your vehicle. Just because someone else has a compressor failure with the same vehicle does not mean you have the same problem.

You can get a set of gauges for under $50 in many places and most places will do an A/C diagnostic for under $30. I charge $24.95 in my own shop.

If you can supply the necessary info, we can tell you if that points to a compressor failure and what should be done to correct the problem. If you can't supply accurate info, we can give you accurate diagnosis or advice.

Fair enough, and an excellent point.

I may be able to mooch a low/hi reading from a shop here; but I doubt I have the need for a set of gauges I'd (hopefully) use only once.

The 3 shops I checked here in Newnan Ga all wanted $90-$120 for an "A/C Checkup". Presumably these 'checkups' involve more than just a quick "hi side/low side" reading... I sure hope so... but if that's all it takes to judge this compressor, then perhaps I can offer them $25 to stick the gauge on.

And you're right: the last thing I want to do is lay out a wad of jack for a/c parts I may not need. But if I were a gamblin man, I'd wager that this compressor's shot.

I'll see what I can finagle tomorrow.

thanks
Jeff

The A/C check usually includes a leak check which is time consuming.

I'll tell you what you are looking for.

High "low side" pressures coupled with low "high side" pressures indicates the compressor has little pumping power. They will usually get further apart when the RPMs are raised but if you see less that 175 at idle, the compressor is shot.

If you find high "low side" pressures coupled with high "high side" pressures, that can mean either an overcharged system or a condenser fan not working properly.

Either way it sounds like you have a leaky compressor. If you have only a leak problem, then all you need it a compressor, accumulator and orifice tube. If you have an internal compressor failure, you may also need a condenser because it will be full of metal particles from the compressor.

Another good point... time = $$$, so that makes sense. But since I can see dye oozing from the compressor, maybe I can ask to skip the leak test & just get a quick gauge check.

To recap: if the hi-side shows less that 175 at idle (ac on max), then there's a high likelihood the compressor's beat?

Lastly, here's the compressor link: http://www.discountacparts.com/...ly~part~60-01841.asp

These guys ok?? By compsrison my local Chevy dealer charges exactly $280 more for the same compressor.

Thx for the replies... gotta log off and will be back Fri a.m.

cheers
jeff

That compressor seems OK as long as your talking about the new one and not the Reman. We have parts suppliers locally that also sell new units like that. Be sure to read the instructions and check whether it comes with oil or not so you get the correct amount of oil in the system.

Thx Hammer. Sorry for late reply but I've been away.

As to my orig post, since this is such a huge repair, and we've had a bit cooler weather here of late, I'm trying to ride this thing out as long as I can. Oddly, at highway speeds (ie, engine rpm >1500) the car cools comfortably. It's just those pesky stops at the red lights when the rpms drop and the compressor struggles.

Per your reply (and thx for the tip about the oil), before I buy any parts I'll check w/ you and your sources.

brgds
Jeff

This thread is three years old. I'm sure whatever he replaced is long done with now. Please look at the dates of threads before posting to them. At the top of the forum is a thread entitled forum rules and I would appreciate it if you read it. Everytime you or anybody else posts to a thread, an e-mail notice is sent out to everyone who has ever posted to it. Can fill up an inbox and get very annoying quickly.

We welcome people to give advice as long as it is safe and accurate. In this case you are suggesting he throw a part at it because you had a similar issue on your vehicle. Just because that was what failed on your truck doesn't mean it is the same bad parts on his. Unless you have looked at his vehicle personally and diagnosed it, do not tell people to just toss parts into it. Maybe you get lucky, most of the time you just thin out your wallet and inflate your credit card bill with the problem still unsolved.

Just a heads up why dont You do a little research yourself.... This is a huge problem with this type AC compresser this compressor just didnt come on this car. And if I can help shead a little light on it and save somebody the headache by dumping 1200 dollors on something a 60.00 part will fix I did go and have it looked at and the same thing that is being said here was told to me," the compresser is bad". I about did and this fixed it....look it up Scroll Compressor Control Valve the part # is V001.

I do dispute your advice for reasons I already stated. If you had offered advice on how to DIAGNOSE it that would be different. I don't give a damn how common it is. Think I don't know what is and isn't common? I do this Sh!t for a living! Since my rent is paid and my internet obviously was too I think I'm not doing too bad a job. Real techs diagnose the problem. Idiots in the shadetree throw parts at it. Figure out which one you are.

Obviously the Huckid on Foniks didn't werk fer you as you have totally ignored the fact you responded to a thread from 2009. I already laid out very nicely that you don't do that and you instead decided to be a dick. Congratulations, you are the official Sphincter of the Month on Carjunky.com. I no longer feel the need to be diplomatic with you. If you want to flap your gums PM me or start a new thread. The original poster doesn't need to be getting notices to his post from three years ago. If you feel like you are being disrespected I don't give a rat's ass really. I wasn't anyone's bitch in two and a half years of lockdown and I won't be one now from someone hiding behind his monitor.

Learn your manners and follow the rules or be banned. Doesn't matter much to me either way.
