I have a question about a 2004 Chevy 1500HD a/c system. This thing just quit working, and I noticed that the compressor was not kicking in. I unplugged the low pressure switch and jumped it just to see if the symptoms would change. The compressor would then kick in.

My question is ..... does this mean the switch is bad? or could this be due to a low freon type of scenario? This truck has never had a problem until this popped up.

Thanks!

Either one will cause it. If it was working OK and suddenly quit, look to the pressure switch.

I finally found the problem .... a nail about 3 inches long had apparently found it's way through the grill just perfectly and pierced the condensing coils mounted behind it. Evidently the impact was enough to cause a very very small crack/leak and left the nail embedded in the coil like an arrow in a target.

Question ...... can this aluminum coil be repaired? Soldered or welded? Or is it best to replace with new/used unit?

Aluminum welding is called "heliarcing" (sp) and takes a real skill to work with to do that. You could ask a specialty shop for welding but most folks just get a new part, T
