03 GMC Savana High Top Van, Regency A/C not strong enough to cool rear Sign In

2003 GMC Savana High Top Conversion Regency Van Air Conditioner issues.

We've had it for a few years and it does this every year.
We get the A/C charged at the shop and they place dye in it to check for leaks.
They dont ever find any leaks...
The air works fine until it gets real hot outside. It's like the A/C system is not strong enough to cool the van when the temps reach 90+
This is when I have to plug in the little fans to blow on the kids in the back but soon that stops working since they end up circulating hot air (even with windows rolled down/opened).
Eventually the A/C just stops working and blows only hot air and there is nothing we can do for the remainder of the summer.

Anyone else have this issue? What did you do to fix it? Add something to the cooling system? We wonder if GMC just didnt put a strong enough cooling system in these.

Here is an image of a van like ours. http://www.conceptcarz.com/view/photo/37889,6998/2003-GMC-Savana_Photo.aspx#photo

Any help is greatly appreciated

Is this one system with two evaporators or some roof top separate thing? If you have cool in the front and not in a rear on a dual system with one compressor most will use an X valve for rear and O tube for front and front would likely quit first with a leak.

Did GM design this or an aftermarket/outsourced concern?

The question of is it powerful enough by design - IDK. The vent temps would be adequate but possible that the BTU power and volume inadequate.

I couldn't make your pic show so just grasping at thoughts on what set up this might be for now,

It may be time for a new receiver drier and orfice tube or expansion valve. When servicing an a/c system I've been told you don't want to overlook those. If it has rear air there should be a second expansion valve in the rear. I changed these out when I serviced our a/c in our minivan and it made a difference.

One question is, if there are no leaks, why is it having to be filled every year? I would think there would have to be a slow leak somewhere. Maybe the compressor isn't doing its job? If you've taken it to the same shop every year maybe take it somewhere else.

There are 2 way to lose refrigerant

  1. The system has a leak
  2. Somebody steals it.

That's as stupid as stupid gets. Turn a a possible low cost real fix into a couple grand of damage - fool!

Joe844. I'm sure maybe you watched some TV show that made you fully agree with what the person is saying at some time. When that happens again, I want you to do a few things for me. I will list them in order to keep it simple.

1. stand up from the couch.

2. Bend over with your head facing forward.

3. Run as fast as you can until forcibly stopped by an object. If you are knocked out for a time, so much the better.

4. Since you give the kind of crap advice like put a sealer in an AC system, please turn your keyboard into a suppository to the only pain the ass you are capable of is on your own.

There is a leak. Find and fix it. Only an Autozone idiot would say put some crap in a can into a car and not expect issues. By the way, those are called "Death Kits" by those of us in the trade.
