I'm new to this, female, and understand English well. Here's my problem.
2002 Pontiac Grand am GT, 109,000 miles. Airconditioner blowing warm air. Do I need to add coolant, and can I do this my self? My mechanical skills are limited, but I do understand the concepts if explained in lay terms. Thanks

Hi and welcome: I moved your post to be your own thread and changed subject line for you to make it YOURS and not on another person's thread.

OK: You basically answered any questions I would have suggested for a fix but no problem admitting you aren't mechanically skilled just know that of all things people can take on A/C is one of the most involved to even know where to begin and it's own specialty for even top notch mechanics many don't take on A/C by area and demand for the work.

It's not DIY friendly for those that would do a lot of their own work. Better to say it's a science then how it's applied to each vehicle, what is likely and how to exactly take on the fix.

The gas A/C uses is called "refrigerant" not coolant so right there even if English isn't a first language that would be for the engine not for A/C anything.

Best bet for you and most people is to find the right shop or tech fully experienced with A/C and has all the tools and equipment to service, repair whatever is wrong. The complaint is almost always "it's not blowing cold" or you wouldn't be asking. There are 100s of reasons that don't involve refrigerant at all to know are working as designed first.

It just plain too costly IMO for you to own tons of tools and test equipment then if it needs something the big buck equipment to do it right.

So far we don't know anything for what is even a maybe?

Here to help and the suggestion is find the right shop. Do not mess with things A/C in particular unless YOU are sure as it's too easy to cause damage vs leave it alone and to the professionals. Sure they cost something. They also have years of time and mega thousands of dollars into being able to do a thing.

The job now is choosing the right shop not doing this yourself. It's not that anyone with time, training and all the tools can't it's just not practical. Automotive A/C is not a good place to try to save a buck without extensive understanding.

You can read some of the locked posts in this section for a clue as to some of what is involved or Google (search away) at principles of air conditioning and be shocked at how much there is to it.

Good luck - find a good A/C shop for this,

T
