00 Jetta - AC Button Lights up when pressed but no AC Sign In

Hi,

I was driving along with my AC on, i pressed the AC button to turn it off for a few min. When I turned it back on a few minutes later the little light on the button came on, but the air that came out is no longer cold.

i turned it off and on again, many times since then, still just "room temperature" air coming out.

something i noticed however is when the AC button is in the "on" position, it sounds/feels like my car is still using the extra fuel required to keep the "AC system" running - i.e. slight lack of performance, and even the gas pedal seems like it's depressing so slightly on it's own (1/4inch) every 5 seconds or so.

based on these symptoms, can anyone think of what it might be?

Hard to say without some more checking but if you can - check that compressor is actually engaged while idling. Note if noisy first or if compressor is objecting - like too much load. If so disable use of it for now.

If quiet and it is turning then check the hoses (two) that go to compressor and along the way towards firewall. One will be warm to hot and the other cool or cold normally. If not compressor isn't compressing properly - probably low on refrigerant but get some pressures and let's find out what and why. Don't just up and add anything as it's not known yet and if low that quickly a leak needs to be found and fixed,

T
