Ok so here is the story. I have a 88 chevy 2500 flatbed pickup. The tail lights havn't been working. Since it is a flatbed they are just like trailer tail lights. I bought new ones but the color of the wires did not match up. I found the "terminal" where the real light wires connect under the hood. I cust all wires about 3 inches from the terminal, spliced new wires and ran then to the back and hooked up the new tail lights.
The new tail lights work perfectly!!! But...... now the truck wont start.
I know one of the wires that rund to the tail lights (and the trailer connector) is a red wire that is always hot. I cut that wire and ran a new one as well. I worried now that red wire went to something else and then back to trailer connector. I thought maybe the fuel pump. When I turn the key, he starter runs and sounds like normal, just the engine wont start.
cound be running new wire for the tail lights/trailer have affected power to other componets?
Please help.

I'm not sure what connector you cut under the hood but at this point I would probably disconnect what you did and for the moment, jumper the wires back to the old wiring and see if the truck starts. If it does, hard wire it back together...
You should really use the wiring at the back of the truck for this..........More than likely the colors won't match an aftermarket light assembly..... The easiest thing to do would be to look at a wiring diagram and wire it that way. If you don't have a diagram, you could use a test light to identify the wires, hook the probe to the different wires and see which one powers up when you turn the lights on, when you hit the brk, rev, etc........The aftermarket lights should have a diagram with it to wire color wire is for what............

Those should get him going RT........... I always forget about AZ, they do have good info on their site and they also own Alldata so I'm sure that helps.........

the wirering schematic is nice. I bought a repair manual at an auto parts place and looked at the schematic in their. I'm no electrician or auto mechanic, but by looking at these schematics, I do not see a connection between the tail light wires and any other electrical componet.
Could a fuse have been blown that would prevent the engine from turning over? I will check that tonight.

It's very possible that you popped a fuse.......... Check them all with a test light.
The next step would be to put it back to the way it was before the problem (hold off on wiring the lights until you get it running) then find out whats missing, spark or fuel? and go from there depending on the results of your tests.....

You state that you cut and/or spliced into a RED wire under the hood. The lighting circuits do not have a red wire any in the system. The only RED wire under the hood belongs to either fuel pump or injector pwr . All wireing for the tail lights and brake lites is under dash ,the steering column(turn signal switch) brake switch and fuse panel are in common with the tail lites. Put your underhood wiring back the way it was. Check ALL the fuses with a test light with key on and light switch on , start at fuse panel and follow the power till you lose it..
