My son ran his 98 olds 3.1 v-6 in a 8-12 inch deep, huge, water puddle. The vehicle stalled and was pushed into nearby lot. It won't start so I removed air cleaner and it was soaked. tried using starter fluid through mass air flow sensor but to no avail. It was wet also. Removed entire housing leading to intake and tried starting fluid sprayed in with throttle flap open. Still will not start. I'm getting spark because the vehicle has backfired with throttle open and ignited the residue of ether. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to put the rubber housing back on so both intake sensors ill be in use? Or should I have it towed in?

You may have done a lot more damage than you are expecting. Water in the intake will bend or break a connecting rod in a heartbeat. Remove all the spark plug and spin the engine over. Dry out the plugs real good before installing. Use a hair dryer to get the ignition module, coils, ignition wires and sensors good and dry.
