transmission affects speedometer head?

97 Subaru Outback, 2.4
What could have caused the failur of the sending units in my speedometer head?
Is it possible that a mechanical malfunction with my AWD system could have lead to this?

We would have to see the head and what went wrong to even try to come up with an educated guess but a mechanical tranny failure would be next to impossible.
