1995 Mitsbishi Gallant, standard transmission,front wheel drive. Can it be towed with a tow rope for 45 miles without hurting the transmission? Or must I use a tow dolly?

It's illegal to tow with a rope in many states. It's also very dangerous. Use a dolly.

You got an answer You CAN'T tow with a rope. Your not going to get any different advice here.

That would work provide the tow vehicle is considerably heavier than the vehicle being towed and you have a good means of attaching it to the vehicle being towed. U=Haul rents a tow dolly that the front tires get supported on.

I STRONGLY advise you not to try to tow that with a rope. The life you take may not be your own.

No bother at all Rusty.... Just take the advise it way it was meant... It this day & age so many things are different from back in the day.... These guys just don't wanna see you get in a bind or worse...
Back in the day I use to tow with rope all the time (actually chain) but there is skill involved & both drivers need to know how to do it..... Most don't get what the rear driver needs to be doing and thats where the trouble starts...... Seems like its just to hard to find 2 drivers that know how to do it anymore............
