strap on drip pan with sponge for Oil Leak?

I have a leak at the rear main seal. It is more of a neusance because we do not like to see oil leaks on our driveway. It is a 96 Pathfinder. The repair is estimated at $860. The car value doesn't warrant that repair cost. I plan to buy a new car in a year. I was thinking of making a drip pan with a sponge and strap it under the leak. Then every so often I can pull it off, empty it, and strap it back on. Is there any reason why I can't have a drip pan with a sponge?

No....I've seen that before. Another option would be to park in the street or put something down in the driveway to catch the oil....Card board, old blanket close to the color of the driveway & just park over it.....

Thanks. So "Is there any reason why I can't have a drip pan with a sponge? " Unfortunately parking on the street in this "posh" neighborhood is not an option :-)

Instead of using a sponge use a tampon or maxi pad. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I can think of one good reason not to do that......... a fire. You're just creating the fuel. You already have the ignition source. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I can see that but the leak is always there and then it drips down around the transmission and then onto the ground. Currently, there is one 2" diameter spot on the driveway after the car has been parked for a while. I assume this is 10-20 drips. Therefore, the custom drip pan with sponge would absorb a few days of drips before I empty it.

Hadn't considered fire so it would have to be thought out well. I've heard of this and never done it to a leak NOT going to be fixed. Bet a diaper or Depends would hold more. Keep engine full or it's game over as you know and watch for it to get worse. Think this out or just clean up the mess it's making to your liking, T

Maxi pads work really good. Seen a few GM's that had one laying on the bottom of the flywheel cover...lol. The tampon has a string that you can hold onto while you dispose of it when it becomes full. Hammer's right though, you'll have a fire hazard doing something like that. You sure the valve covers aren't leaking and making you think the rear main is leaking? They are bad about that. Normally i would never advise this but it sounds like your going to do something good or bad anywho. You've got an older model eng with high mileage.>>> Not so tight clearances . Switch to a heavier weight oil , say 10w 40 or if your in the south , a straight 40. Add a bottle of additive that swells seals . Normally I am dead against this , but once in a great while it will slow down a leak .BTW .... If your truck is the sport model you should get the ultra slim pad with "wings". .... JEEZE now we're all experts on women's hygine products. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
