Re: steering Sign In

Why is it a problem that it's easy to steer? lol
If it's not using or leaking fluid I'd leave it be.

Re: steering Sign In

Is it the same direction all the time or does it do it in both directions?

Re: steering Sign In

That's sounding like a problem with the trigger valve in the steering box.

Re:05 Chev Express Van 2500 - steering itselt Sign In

Steve - been following this without tons to say. Plain easy steering wouldn't worry me but steering itself does. A parts look up shows this should be a rack an pinion system receiving the pressure of fluid to assist or add power to YOUR input from the wheel.

Rack looks like this........

Could be wrong but that's what parts showed and I would have guessed a gearbox like older ones. This item should have all the valving to control assist (my guess) and is pricey.

OK: What I would do for a test is hoist front wheels, turn key so wheel will turn and see how it feels engine off and all steering parts inspected too. Now start engine with it pointing straight ahead. If this thing moves the wheel without touching it I'd default to blame this rack. You probably should be able to steer it by hand underhood and feel for binding or something wrong. If binding no doubt it will be hard to know where. Rare but if those U-joints really turn sharp I would suspect them and hard to know.

Some other checks: Back on solid ground and straight ahead. Engine off now check how much freeplay steering wheel has - shouldn't be much using just a finger.

I'd also be looking at shaft from underhood for a rubber damper and probably two U-joints to get input to this rack for problems thru steering shaft.

These are just some tests and ultimately I think this needs to be witnessed by a GM truck tech or any high end tech with this stuff.

Everything to do with steering and suspension parts should be checked. It's not a game and I consider this in that it can steer itself a serious safety issue.

No harm in paying for a diagnosis and fixing it yourself if you wish and can. I'm making this post because I think this is a first for this site for this behaviour. Best I can suggest for the fix,

T

Re: Re:05 Chev Express Van 2500 - steering itselt Sign In

Shows to go you how looking up parts goesCrazy That was from Autozone's own site and has been wrong before. Same issues apply just that now instead of rack I'm thinking the box itself and the shaft and route to get to it still applies. Same tests, same suggestions but now it's the steering gear box instead of a rack and pinion.

Freeplay in a steering box will have a little and most racks have none or much less - otherwise it's the same suggestions or guesses in this case and there are more joints to steering parts - that's all. Same checks.

Side note: That style gearbox has been used for endless decades on end with incredible dependability - this problem is unusual,

Re: Re:05 Chev Express Van 2500 - steering itselt Sign In

That's right. It's a conventional steering box. The valve system is internal and would be repaired by replacing the steering box with a remanufactured unit.
