smell of exhaust from the hood after replacing gasket... please help!!!! Sign In

Hello,
I have a 2000 Toyota Sienna, 3.0L, recently I have replaced the rear valve cover gasket, in the process I have decided to replace the upper penlum (intake) gasket as well, since i have to remove the intake manifold anyway to get to the rear valve cover. And I have also replace the PCV valve on top of the valve cover But after putting everything back together and got the engin started, I have noticed that the smoke is coming out from the hood, dont know where it is coming from, and it smelled like exhaust. I'm really confused by thisPirate..... please help....
PS...in the middle of typing this, just got a call from my uncle, he told me that when he started the engine he can see that the oil is dripping, and when turned off, the oil leak stop.... maybe I installed the gasket wrong? But can the oil leak smell like exhaust?.....PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Yes, oil burning off hot exhaust parts can make an exhaust type odor. You do need to chase down an active oil leak and recheck your work.

Just a note from the get go for needing this work and PCV etc. If crankcase has pressure, even slight instead of PCV overcoming any normal blow-by gaskets like valve cover(s) etc., are much more apt to leak and other problems.

Can be needing PCV system all tight or a sign of a worn engine,

T
