sideways starter?

i need help putting a new starter on a 95 nissan altima gxe. my boyfriend says it's sideways, so he is not sure what to do.. i think that he doesn't know how to get to it.

The engine is tranverse and the starter like the engine will go with the direction of the starter, T

how do you put it in though? does the engine have to come out? is it a diy job?

I doubt very much this is that hard a job and NO the engine does not have to come out.
It could take some tools to get at some tight spots.
1. Disconnect neg battery cable at battery
2. Take a good look at old starter that you have room too simply back it out from where it's bolted in with clearance of about 3 inches. If not it may require some trickery that can make them hard to do.
3. If things still look good (I don't know your car without seeing it) take the electrical stuff off first.
4. Remove 2 or three bolts and it it comes right out. If all bolts are out and it doesn't budge just jockey it with your hands it may just be stickey.
5. Install new one the way the old one came out. Hook up the electrical stuff and it should be good to go.

thanks.. apparently my boyfriend didn't know where the starter was, but i found it. i actually crawled under the car just to find it. isn't the starter usually visible from opening the hood? ya, about the tools... i noticed that it was kind of hard to get to the bolts from that angle, there's a big freakin' pipe in the way.. so the right tools will do it? i fugured it probably wasn't that hard but my boyfriend likes to complicate things. he's a pain in the ass. sorry, i digress. this isn't bitch about your boyfriend forum..

Most starters would be done from under the engine. You and friend now make me wonder why you think you need a new starter motor at all?
They can be a pain with obstructions. Most are OK but I can't speak for every car ever made. You may do better getting a shop to do this.
Some day if I hit the lottery I will bring back the Dodge Dart that anyone could work on with an ajustable wrench and pliers!!  T

i was kind of wondering that myself, after i had already bought the starter. i'm just trigger happy(?), i guess.. i'm tired of taking the bus every day. i can always return it... he usuallly knows what goes wrong with cars. he just doesn't really know how to fix the problems all the time, not in the right way anyway. i refer to it as "guerilla car repair" .

I started car repair and other things about 40 years ago with minimal tools and ended up with perhaps about $US40,000 worth of tools. Some shops probably get into millions!
Where I live is brushing on $100 bucks an hour for labor plus parts markup and they will take responsibility for their work in good faith even if not in writing. I may stand alone in this world but I trust people at their word and a handshake and that's good enough for me.
Hope and trust if needed you can find the mechanics or shop that can help you. We are not all out to get you and are NOT the richest people on earth but do our best to help you out. T
