hello,
I have a 87 toyota celica with 140k miles on it. yesterday while my wife was driving I noticed that the tempeture starting to go up I told my wife to pull ove becuase the car was overheating and she said that it was ok that there was nothing to worry about.. >:( finally steam started to come out from under the hood and we had to stop the car .when I open the the hood i notice that the coolant came out of the radiator and when i turn the key the cooling fan for the radiator does not work. im not sure why that happned / now im scare to turn on the engine or even to mess around with the car... what could this be? should i be scare ?

Jose; The cooling fan switch tells the fan when to come on. It is usually mounted in the radiator, itself, on the older models. With that said; Is the coolant level okay? If the switch isn't in physical contact with coolant, it may not 'work'. If the vehicle has A/C, the fan should run when the A/C is turned on. If it doesn't, check the fan relay. There may be another relay you can swap for testing purpose. Check to see if you are getting power to the fan motor. You should be able to ground the wire going to the fan switch and make the fan come on.
Now...The only time you need the fan, under normal ambient temps, is in stop and go driving. If it gets hot while driving at steady speeds above, say, 20mph, then it's a whole new ball game. Whatever you do, do not let this get too hot. Very easy to blow a head gasket.

Remove the two 10mm bolts at the top of the fan, remove the top rad hose then slide the fan out the top.You can change the fan yourself.
