If it doesn't crank I would be looking at the starter. The battery & connections would have to be checked 1st but if just letting sit makes it start cranking again, sounds like the starter has seen better days. When it's not cranking, rap the starter body with a hammer to see if that makes it crank.......... If it cranks and doesn't start, but then starts normally after just sitting a few hours, you could have a fuel leak down problem. This could be due to a failing fuel pressure regulator, one or more leaking fuel injectors, or a failing check valve at the fuel pump. Either way you're losing residual fuel line pressure.
