p0101 MAF/CAF range/performance? 98 s10 Sign In

Hello all,
I have yet another issue with my 98 chevy s10. It has been shifting very strangely and I had begun to suspect transmission issues. I was on my way out of town (just getting on the freeway) when my check engine light came on. I went home, and got two p0101 "Generic Mass or Volume Air Flow circuit range/performance" codes - one pending, one freeze frame.
I checked vacuum lines, cleaned egr valve, air filter is clean, nothing caught in screen over MAF sensor or anything.. I then cleared the error code.
Put everything back together and truck seemed to shift/run better. But I got the same error code today, again while accelerating onto the freeway (not super fast, the onramps here are fairly long)
Heres the freeze frame data:

Code
fuel sys 1 - OL drive
fuel sys 2 - OL drive
Calc Load - 54.12%
ECT(F) - 177
STFT b1 - 0.00%
LTFT b1 - 7.03%
STFT b2 - 0.00%
LTFT b2 - 6.25%
MAP(inHG) - 28.94
Eng RPM - 3943
Speed - 58mph
MAF(lb/min) - 12.49
TPS% - 71.37

What does this stuff mean? would the maf cause the crappy shifting? I was unable to find the ohm specs for the sensor so I cant test the damn thing myself, and I don't want to just go replacing random sensors if thats not really the problem; what else could cause this besides a faulty sensor? Is there any other way to test it, or does anyone know the ohm specs?

Thanks much,

Jon

You don't have a K&N air filter, do you?

no, its a stock intake/filter. newish motor, <20k on it.
I don't know what was replaced other than a crate motor, as the mechanic that did the work was a crappy one.

I found the following article:
link deleted............not allowed
I'm about to try to test it, but the multimeter I have is different from one I'm used to so the test may or may not be successful lol

I'd try getting some Mass Air flow cleaner and cleaning it first.

okay, are there any signs of it being dirty? The filaments/resistors/metal rails look clean and have no distinct smell. I took it all apart earlier and was about to use carb cleaner on it until i saw the filament/ resistors on them. I thought,
"hmm..I wouldnt use carb cleaner on my motherboard in my pc so ill check before I use it on this thing."

Is it true it would be bad for it (I have a can of non-chlorinated)? Can I use high concentrate (91%) isopropyl alcohol on it, or would it just be safer to use the cleaner?

thanks

No, I said Mass air flow cleaner for a reason. This wire sense air flowing across it so it's critical. go to the auto parts store and they will have MAF cleaner.

Alrighty, I'll pick some up and give it a gentle rinse.
If the code comes back up would the next course be replacing it? Or are there any other tests I can run on related components? I want to be as certain as I can about this lol because I've done nothing but dump money into this vehicle and I'm almost to the point of cutting all of my losses.

There are tons of things that can set a MAF code. Check all the intake parts for any leaks between the MAF and the TBI. A plugged exhaust will do that too.

Re: p0101 MAF/CAF range/performance? 98 s10 Sign In

would a mechanic with a live data scanner (read: aamco's free diagnostics) be able to determine the root cause of this?
What are the odds that it'd be a bad idea to drive the truck in this condition? (approx 6mi each way)?

I've yet to grab a can of MAF cleaner, either way I'll give them a good spraying before I go to the shop.

Sure, live data will show a MAF problem if you know how to read it. You have to be watching the data while driving and duplicating the problem and it has to be a good enough tool to update the data fast enough. If you have a read good one you could graph it out.

A lab scope would be much better.

damn.
I'm thinking more and more that I will just need to take this in and pay for a diagnostics when I get paid.

I cleaned the MAF sensor with maf sensor cleaner, and here were the results:

giving the following codes:
/p0102 <appeared after MAF sensor was cleaned.
/p0101 <started with this one.
/p0340 <appeared after MAF sensor cleaned.

Also (new problems):
Tachometer does not register RPM, speed works as expected.

fuses are all good (under engine compartment and driver's door panel...are there any more hidden somewhere?), no vacuum leaks, air filter clean, wiring is in tact from what I can see.. what the heck can cause these errors? would it be best to take it to a shop for diagnostics? I'm very concerned as I don't have too much more money to dump into the truck, I've already put in 4,000 on top of what I paid for it so im trying to figure out if i should cut my losses.

Thanks,
Jon

EDIT:
I'm gonna pull the ECM tomorrow, pop it open and see if there's any visual signs of a bad ecm (bad caps/burns/warps/etc.)
