over heating but no heat

i have a 95 pontiac grandd prix with the 3.1 and it will over heat after about 10 min. of driving put i get no heat in side the car and ive looked at the fans when it starts to heat up and they never come on even when i put the ac. on ofr defrost top hose stays cold bottom warm please help  '' what do you think it could be

hi, i dont know alot about gm cars but you may want to start at the fusebox for the fan not working. if you have the plastic colored code fuses, pull out the one for heater/blower or ac depending on how they are labled. check to see if metal inside is broke in half or not. if you have a manual it may indicate fuse box locations and identify each fuse. i would start here for fan motor/blower checks. jack bikebarn

Sounds like there may be a couple of things going on. If the car is moving it shouldn't be overheating that quickly even if the fan isn't coming on, the fan is for high temps & low speeds or sitting idling.
If the oil is milky or you are getting white smoke out the back I would have the system checked for exhaust gases. It there are none of those signs I would be tempted to change out the T stat to make sure it isn't sticking shut......Also if the fans still aren't coming on, that problem will need to be tracked down.........

I had a 94 Grand AM and i had the same problem. It turned out to be the thermastat that would not open up. I replaced it and the problem was fixed. I dont know much about cars but thought i should speak from my experiance.

My first thought when I read overheating and no interior heat is low coolant. You haven’t mention whether the rad itself, along with the pressure bottle has been checked for coolant level?
Another reason I’m thinking along these lines is that if there is adequate coolant in the system and the water pump’s impeller is circulating the coolant. Even with a stuck closed thermostat; you’d still have heat (very hot heat) in the interior, right up to the point of the engine overheating.
Yes the engine cooling fans should also be coming on when the AC or defrost is selected; but if the AC pressures are not reaching a certain pressure, they won’t; does the AC compressor turn on when AC or defrost is selected?
Also if the coolant level is low and only air is surrounding the temperature sensor; air will not transfer enough heat to the sensor to be accurate. The engine would almost be ready to melt down before the fans would come on.

has this car run low on coolant at any time? These engines are prone to air pockets when they do and require bleeding or you will have the same issue you are describing. Bear in mind they are also known for bad intake and head gaskets so check thoroughly over it. The above posts also have merit as to the possible causes of your problem and all of the things mentioned are possible and need to be looked for. If you do try to remove the water pump, be careful when breaking loose the pump bolts. Once in a while you can break one and then you're in for a lot of work and a lot of profanity being uttered.
