Well after replacing the water pump in my son's '91 Dodge Shadow (or rather he did it and I superivsed..ha)... We quickly realized that it wasn't the water pump that was squealing as it started squealing again.

I squirt some lubricant on the outside of the belt and the squealing went away. What the...? I'm a "classic" car driver and fixer.. serpentine belts are not my forte'. How is it the outside of the belt is causing squeaking?

Doing a little research I've found some statements that the outside of the belt can "laminate".. as well as the pulleys. Thus losing ability to grip properly? Suggestions are from taking fine grit sand paper to water pump wheel (which also seems to act as the tensioner), to replacing the belt it's self.

Anybody had issues of this kind in the past and can shed some light as to the various fixes that seem to work would be appreciated.

Forget the home remedies. The belt is shot. Replace the belt and clean all the pulleys with brake cleaner.

Take belt off and inspect all pulleys for pieces of the belt stuck on them , be sure all spin freely and smooth . unless you did so when changing pump , put on a new belt . the moveable pulley is the tensioner .
