need help, car wont come out of park Sign In

hey, i have a ford mustang 2000, 95k miles on it. Its pretty cold where i am at and its been snowing. I usually warm up my car every morning .

well today i let it warmup, and everything is fine. EXCept for the fact my stick ( i have an auto tranny) did not want to budge from park... i did hit the brake, and i did move my wheel. none of that helped. I opened the hood, to see if maybe i needed to take the battery out, and reset my car compute. I closed it back up, and out of nowhere it worked. i drove around , parked again. And bam it happened again, i plan on getting it towed tommorow... to a mechanic. Im just wondering what the issues could be, and how much i could be expecting to pay.

It's a fairly common prob . There is as interlock pin that prevents you from shifting out of park unless the brake pedal is pressed . Ford had a prob years ago with cars going into gear when not wanted. Most tiimes its fuse or bad brake switch . Less common is bad solenoid.Yours sounds like a bad brake sw.

Verify your brake lights are working first. If not, check the brake light switch and the fuse that feeds it.

quick question guys, btw thanks for the help. Do i have a shift autolock release somewhere in a 2000 mustang? if i do it should be a small button near the p n d r labels right?

i was told i should use a key to press it or something of the sorts?

I believe theree is a small covcer near the shifter , remove the plug and insert a small srewdriver in and push down at same time with key on move shifter out of park. start car in neutral.
