I have a 1978 f150 custom with 300 straight 6 it does not want to idle when I hold the gas it will run fine but as soon as you let off the gas it will idle for a couple of second the chug entill it dies the you have to hold the gas in to get it started again . It has a double barrel motordraft carb on top.

Take the air cleaner off and put your hand or a rag over the top of the carb and partially cover it while the engine is idling. If this improves the idle to where it will run on it's own, then you have a vacuum leak. Grab the top of the carb and wiggle it. If it moves and the throttle plate doesn't then the carb will need to be removed and the screws tightened up. Those were good for getting loose. If it's tight then grab a can of carb clean and start spraying around the intake manifold and vacuum hoses, any place where the idle raise would indicate a vacuum leak.....
