loud humming/buzzing

my 99 mercury cougar 2.5L is making a loud humming/buzzing sound from under the hood, its manual trans. and when stopped is idleing around 2000rpm but then sometimes drops down to almost 200rpm and feels like its strugling to stay alive, sound is also while driving too, any ideas on what this could be?

You may want to check your IAC motor.... I know the older ones would split a diaphram inside causine a noise & erratic idle... I forgot the exact style this one uses but check it out anyway....
