For an HEI distributor if distributor isn't marked with a #1 spot on cap the #one cap tower should be the closest to #1 cylinder which is front right plug looking at the engine. Distributor spins clockwise (as you look down on it) and starting at that one the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Engine cylinders are #1 front left, #2 front right sequentially in order with odds on left side of engine, odds on right.

If this shows.....

Water Pump center front
#1...........#2
#3...........#4
#5...........#6
#7...........#8
Dist center rear

___________
Dist looking down....

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, # 1 on distributer needs to point to # 1 on motor, # one cyclinder is right front, odd on right and even on left standing in front of grill, run wires clockwise. this is the firing order for the 305, 350, and 400 chevy smallblocks, hope it helps.

Ok, ok - I found a pic that shows it. Didn't you like my drawing without a diagram already to copy?
