ideas how to limp my car back home Sign In

i keep my 1969 mustang in a rented garage. i put the car away for the winter of 2010 and havent even taken the cover off of it since lol....i know i know. sorry

but with these nice weather in the north east ive got the itch to go for a ride. so i go over to the garage to pull the battery and stick it on a trickle charger when i notice some coolant under the car. my first thought was oh great my waterpump is leaking.. but i traced the problem to my lower radiator hose. I had installed some factory correct belts and hoses a few years back and apparently the power steering hose was rubbing the lower radiator hose.

so now i have a grove in the hose from the belt and a pin hole. I want to limp it home to my house (2.5 - 3 miles away) to put on a new hose.

Ill carry some bottles of 50/50 mix to top off the radiator, assuming the hose wont blow out on me.

can i tightly wrap the hose in duct tape to act as a buffer to keep the belt from rubbing any further into the hose?

If the belt saws a hole into the hose, what you pour in will just pour right back out. If you use duct tape, the belt will just saw through the tape and the rest of the hose.

It would probably be better to just get you a drain pan and empty the radiator and replace the hose where it sits. Then you can pour what you drained out back into the radiator. That's unless the coolant is really nasty.

ill just try and get the car started and see if the coolant starts pissing out and how close the belt comes to it. in 18mos only about a 4inch circle of coolant weaped out of the hose

If the car is in good enough shape to warrant keeping in a garage all winter , I would follow DS's advise. If you are not allowed to do work in the rented garage or you want to take the risk. Try to tie hose away from belt after tapeing several wraps.Top off rad and reinstall cap just to the first detent. Have everything ready ,hood down ,garage door open . Start car ,dont wait for warm up. Turn off as soon as possible. Just remember if anythung goes wrong the headline will read. MAN DESTROYS CLASSIC CAR OVER TEN DOLLAR HOSE . GOOD LUCK

2-3 miles only? Is towing it out of the question? Even if expensive to get it to where you can fix this it would be cheap compared to wrecking it. Can you at least line it up for an uncomplicated tow out of where it is now?
