i feel like a fire Sign In

And here it goes, I recently bought a 1999 4x4 suburban from a podunk car lot. I knew when bought it there was a problem, with a rough idle and while driving. I replaced just the plugs and it ran fine, but i ran out of gas one night and a friend of mine brought me some gas that he didnt know had water in it and it hasnt ran right since. i have replaced : timing chain, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, spider inj., fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor gear, cam shaft sensor, crankshaft sensor. And it still jumps 180 out every time i restab the distributor and try to start it. What else could be wrong?

Not even possible.

I doubt it. One's in Texas and the other is in CA.

Re: i feel like a fire Sign In

If it quit running after a can of bad gas, why did you replace hundreds of dollars worth of parts? What was the fuel pressure at that caused you to change the pump? Why did you change the timing set and distributor gear? Like HT said, it cannot jump 180 like you are describing. Also you need to realize you cannot time this distributor. Its not like the old ones pre-96. You have to set the cam sensor offset which requires a high-end scan tool to do.

Get it to #1 TDC compression and get the rotor lined up to the #1 plug when you drop in the distributor. Then see what you have. You may set a P1345 code which will then need the previously mentioned scanner to set it correctly and clear the code.

I doubt he can even figure out where number one is with that funky flat cap.

Re: i feel like a fire Sign In

The reason he think he is 180 out is because he doesn't realize that the crankshaft spins twice for every one revolution of the camshaft. When he turns the crank to position the mark with the timing cover pointer he is probably on the exhaust stroke.

If it is off one tooth, it won't run. It has to be on the compression stroke for #1 when you line your mark on the crank with the timing cover pointer. The distributor rotor has to be pointing at the little number 8 triangle on the base plate with the distributor installed. That is just to get it to run. Then you need to set the cam offset as HT was mentioning.

I figured that but I was waiting to see if he even came back.

What he spent on all those parts he didn't need would've more than paid for the proper fix.
