help with car sitting for ten years!

Hi All, looking for some expert advice here. I have a 1984 camaro 2.8 v6 auto that has been sitting unused and not started for about 10 years (long story). the car has sentimental value to me so I will not sell it or junk it. now I'm wanting to get back on the road. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a rough estimate of what would need to be done to the car to make it roadworthy. I realize this is impossible to accurately asnwer but I'm just looking for ballpark. like would the engine need to be rebuilt automatically(I don't know much about cars) or just serviced? if rebuild would replace be the better option? and what other things would need to get done/replaced right off the bat just from sitting. I assume barakes and suspension from rust. tranny if I remember was slipping somewhat at 3rd gear, not sure if that means it needs to be serviced or rebuilt/replaced. I think I remember the engine stalling if the AC was on also. trying to figure here if I can afford to get it running or should just get a used car for now. thanks in advance for any help.

About the only thing we could tell you for sure is that all the fluids would have to be replaced and I would bet that there will be numerous other fuel issues. Beyond that, someone would have to inspect it to determine just what kind of shape it's in. 10 years in a dry garage compared to 10 years sitting near the ocean which would render the car almost totally destroyed. I'm sure your somewhere in between but only an inspection will tell us. I wqouldn't be surprised if it took a couple thousand dollars to make it road worthy but as I said, there can be real surprises. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I can relate to sentimental value but take Desi's advise and I guarantee his estimate is low, way low...... I've seen situation like this before and personally try to stay away from them..... The latest was a Toyota parked for 7 years... I passed on a 17hr ticket & everyone thought I was crazy but I knew what was going to happen & it did...... The tech did a good job on all the work he did and systematically everything else started to "go" on this car the more it was driven. I even would do the diag work for the tech for n/c when it came back just to keep my # off the WOs. Then the head gasket blew & now I'm stuck with it.... If this car was garaged for 10 years, you have a slim chance...... Just be prepared to put A LOT of money into this car and the stuff that goes wrong will be no fault of who ever puts it back on the road...... It is harder on a car to sit than it is to be driven..... It would be cheaper and less hassle to find a similar year and model that has been driven & taken car of that it would to try to get this one back into shape. Basically you aren't looking at heavy maintenance to get it back on the road, you are looking at a full restoration .....

Spending $4000 to do that would only take care of the engine portion. You can still spend thousands more on the rest of the vehicle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

so engine rebuild is 4000? I've seen new engine for 1700 range. I don't know what the ;abor to put it in would be. then say struts/shocks, brakes tires. could it all be done for under 5000 possibly?

Your looking at a long block exchange for that price and that may be a low estimate. Now you have to buy all the accessories like water pump, all ignition, all hoses, radiator, fuel pump, carburetor, fuel lines, filters, gasket set, battery, possible starter or alternator. Now you have to install all this which is $1,000 or more. That doesn't even begin to touch the brakes, brake rotors, brake lines, master cylinder, shocks, tires, struts, possible numerous wiring and electrical issues including frozen electric windows and door locks. I could go on and on but I hope I have made my point ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Basically what HT posted is exactly what happened to the Toyota. The original bill was around 3500. They replaced all the fluids, tires, brks along with all the rubber parts as well, belts, hoses, leaking gaskets, timing belt, plugs, wires, fuel service an more. Then the fuel pump goes out, then the window master switch goes out, then the turn signals stop working, then the drivers window regulator breaks..... The radio quits working. The frt bumper falls off! Then the head gasket blows (now I get stuck with it). Now it comes in with trans diff cover & axle seals leaking...... I talked to him & convienced him a tranny shop would be the best option..... Then next day my SM corners me with the question " Since when did we stop doing tranny work!!!!???" all I could say was " Since you were off & I talked to the guy" As luck would have, it came in today for the leaks & I was buried with diags & a head gasket.... So yet now a 3rd tech is involved and as long as it isn't me I'm overjoyed...... Now it's his baby...... None of that is made up.....That is the way this one is playing out & it's far from over....... The guys is being cool & is paying for everything for the simple fact it's no ones fault....... If you want to keep the car for whatever reasons that's cool but it's not a simple as just an engine, tranny or rear end.......If this has been sitting outside for 10 years...... It is now a money pit so just know this going in to it and be prepared to spend some money and have a standing appointment at your shop of choice.............
