fuel leak in 79 chrystler 440 Sign In

i have a 79 chrystler 440 that wont start and is suddenly leaking fuel from under the exhaust manifold. The top of the motor is dry, lines are not leaking. The fuel is running down the whole side of the block around the plugs. its hard to see under the manifold where the source of the leak is. The only thing under it though is the bottom of the valve cover. The engine has a 4bbl holley if that helps. I do know my way around an engine, but never seen this before. Anyone have a clue?

Does the engine run? How good?

Obviously, it is very dangerous to run it with the fuel leak but I need to know if the engine runs normal.

If you installed an electric fuel pump on this you may have too much fuel pressure.

It ran fine yesterday. Started right up, no gas pedal. Today, it wont start. It just keeps cranking. The fuel only leaks when I crank it and is across the whole side of the block. Thanks for responding, this is my rv, and Im kinda stranded but I do have my tools!

That fuel has to be coming right out of the exhaust manifold. Look down the carb while cranking and see if fuel is leaking down the carb. Sounds like the needle and seat is stuck open in the carb.

Fuel does run from the jets inside the carb, but outside is all dry. I MAY have flooded it, but Ive still never seen this happen to a flooded vehicle. My old man just told me the same thing though. The needlevalve may be stuck. Does this sound like reasonable explanation to you? First thing in the morniing when I get some light I'll try that. Looks like Im bunkin here tonight, lol.

That is the only explanation for where your seeing the fuel. Just be careful because just as much fuel likely went into the exhaust system and it could blow the muffler off when it fires.

Egad! Have a fire extinguisher at the ready while finishing diagnosis/fix as the fuel running into plugs really bothers me!

Check the oil. If flooding that badly it probably will show too full and smell of fuel by itself. Change it right away and again if needed.

It's "an out there" possibility there is a leak and you can't see it easily as I've seen both fuel and cooling systems make a fine fish-line type squirt you can't see well. That meaning the leak is away from where you find evidence! Run you finger/hand in any possible path that could happen or perhaps as our famous way2old uses talcum powder to find odd stuff like that.

BE CAREFUL!

Re: fuel leak in 79 chrystler 440 Sign In

I got 3 opinions on the matter and all pointed to pin and seat. So this morning , after it all dried out, I tapped around the carb (gently) to free the pin. To my surprise, there was a hole in the carb right under the pin the size of a quarter. I believe it was cracked, but I made it worse. It was not leaking from there, but I believe it was indeed cracked, malfunctioning the pin which flooded the engine. Needless to say, I lifted the carb and took the battery out. Now Im in search of a thermoquad 4bbl carb (used) for this 79 440. It has not been easy. I'll post a pic of it later, as my camera is not available at the moment. Autozone wants 350 bucks and cant get one till jan 9. I would love to see my family for Christmas...wish me luck!

Thanks for posting what you found. I can't believe if it's available you can't get it next day?! Have you tried NAPA or other parts places? Speed shops - anything not to mess up your holidays! There's got to be a way to get that faster than that,

Re: fuel leak in 79 chrystler 440 Sign In

The good news is, I got a ride to my brothers house for the holidays. The bad news is, Ive been researching this thing all day, and found it to be a model 9211 Carter. These were only made 78-79. Im trying to crossreference with Holley for the availability to that verses carter. Its a spreadbore, 800-850 with 1 1/2" primaries. Or if I can find the center housing to this one. Its made of a material that is supposed to run 20 degrees colder, so Im thinking they must have broke a few, right? So there should be a replacement for that part and a rebuild kit. I'd really like to save this one if possible. I liked it when it ran. With the 440, I can spin duals and pull the front end way up on this 10,000 lb truck! Not that I do that alot, but I had to try it a couple of times, hea, hea. Wink Thanks for keeping up. I'll be posting more as I go through this for any other "Thermoquad" owners. I have some really good reference sites saved.
